Culebra flats fishing
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Anyone crae to share any general details about flats fishing on Culebra. I have name and email of one guide (seasonal). But would like another perspective. Are there wadeable flats (and flats species such as bonefish) reachable from shore transportation or from kayaks? Are there any rentable small boats? Are there resident tarpon year round? basically, is it worth pursuing a fly fishing visit to the island?

Thanks for any and all help.

Even tough I do not know what flat fising is, I understand you are willing to fish from shore. That I have not seen in Culebra, only little kids having fun doing so.
Casa Ensenada have 16/17 footer motor boats for rent. They may hold three maybe four persons, and go fishing near shore.
This way you may get some groupers, stripes fish, parrot fish, snappers, and some others.

Peter,

To answer your basic question; yes, it is worth pursuing a fly fishing visit to Culebra.

Culebra has good fishing. The popular sport fish include snook, snapper, kingfish, and tarpon in the mangrove inlets and bays, and permit and bonefish on the sand flats. The mangroves, bays, and flats are in two main areas, both on the east side of Culebra; Bahía Manglar and Ensenada Honda. There is also fishing over and near reefs and deep channels all around Culebra and the offshore islets. (No fishing in the preserve between Cayo Luis Peña and Culebra)

The photos of bonefish on http://www.culebraboatrental.com are of two experienced bone fishermen using a Culebra Boat Rental boat. They were overjoyed with the fishing. They said that they had never seen so many huge bonefish!

We rent 16-ft skiffs and an 18-ft vee hull, with 20 and 40-hp motors.

I will send you more details and a rental contract in a separate email. Meanwhile, you can get more information at http://www.culebraboatrental.com.

Hi Pete,
When will you be there? We expect to do some fishing too, maybe can split a boat? We're there 2/8-2/20.

Lili,
Sorry but we're just in the earliest info gathering phase, probably not coming until next winter. But thanks for the offer. I would love to hear what you found there fishing-wise.
