Are the ferries THAT bad?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

A friend (who is coming to Culebra with our big group) was told by someone who recently visited that the ferries were really uncomfortable (definitely take dramamine) with choppy waters and farm livestock on board.

We were taking the ferry because of A) the price and B) a friend is scared of small aircraft, but if the ferries are that bad......

We are planning on visiting Vieques as well, for a total of 4 or so ferry rides.

Are the ferries really that unpleasant? Should we look into aircraft for a group of 10?

We took the ferry back to Fajardo on a Monday at 1:00 and didn't find it uncomfortable. No livestock. It was actually fairly empty. I was glad that I had taken dramamine because the water was a bit choppy, but not too bad. And you can't beat the price!

Sounds like your friend was on the cargo ferry.

Like any boat, when the water is choppy, you can get seasick on the ferries. The water is not always choppy or rough, but certainly can be.

Some people get seasick at ANY motion at all. Most don't.

When the water is really rough, the ferries are closed.

The ferries can be very calm or bumpy depending on the winds. This can change week to week or day to day at any time of the year. The cargo ferry is less comfortable than the passenger one as there are fewer options in seating areas & the seats are unpadded benches. The passenger boats are quite comfortable.

I have never seen any livestock on board the ferries.

With 10 of you I would think that you might want to look into a charter from San Juan. It could work out pretty inexpensive with a group that size. Too, the small planes are quite good, the flight is 1/2 hr. & offer stunning views to distract you while on board.

Oh I didn't know we could do charters. Maybe we will look into that.

I looked into the airplanes (just in case) but they were a little pricey (almost $200 roundtrip.) Does anyone know if we can charter a small plane for less?

Good morning,
The flights on Flamenco & VAL (see the "FAQ" tab on our website palmettoculebr.com for full info. & contact #s) are $105 r/t pp. I believe that charters can be $6-800 for the plane. You can call them directly for more info.
