Refund Policies and Trip Cancellation
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Listing some of my personal properties in Vienna, I came across VRBO's advice to travellers. It really applies to most accommodations in Culebra and I thought, I'd share it and maybe it will raise the awareness of visitors to the possibility of cancellation insurance!

Enjoy Culebra!

Good advice Michael! I've rented with VRBO and other agencies and it is always wise to look thoroughly at their cancellation policies. This goes for everything that makes up your trip, airlines tickets, lodging, train or cruise arrangements, etc. It is always wise to plan ahead and invest into travel insurance which can cost $25-40/person and can include things like coverage of medical expenses and emergency helicopter or plane transfers. Happy travels! J

Damn, and I always thought I'd love to go to Vienna. If I could only figure out how to fork out 25 more dollars...oh well. I guess I'll have to go to Rincon instead.

It is raining...it's been raining for a couple of hours now. It's so wonderful!!!!!!!!!!! Hooray the rain! Sorry campers, and I do truly mean that, but we need this so much. Like excited little dancers on the roof, each drop part of the rain song.
Water ME, fill ME. Oh glory.

MJ:

everywhere has a Vienna, it's kind of like a Springfield just more Germanic... but no one can promise Sacher Torte and Dengue in Salzburg is so rare these days. I always fly by the seat of my pants.

back on topic and to clarify (what's prob. already been said) does travel insurance cover MEDIVAC?

seriously I've heard of travel insurance, but was never cautious/thoughtful enough to consider it until recent years, how does one buy it and what does it really cover?

I suppose I could google it or ask a travel agent, but the whole industry confuses me, I've known actuaries and adjustors and only recently became aware of "wedding insurance"?!? (shotguns used to work)

I just know that e.g. last Easter it was a problem for a lot of small vacation rental owners whose guests did not show and wanted a refund due to the ferry not operating - something that definitely would have been covered by insurance. And it would have paid for the hotel in San Juan on top of that!

These lost days can never be sold again. With the prices paid for properties in Culebra these days I know that the income from the rentals is badly needed to pay for the mortgages. I think renters should be aware that, yes things can go wrong, and no the VR owners on Culebra cannot afford to 'cover' for them. Especially since you may purchase insurence for 25 bucks.

When I book a plane, order dinner or make any kind of commitment, I do not expect the other party to cover for changes in my plans - no matter whether that's due to the dog eating my homework, the ferry not running or I simply changing my mind.

How do other people deal with no shows requesting their money back?

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
