Killing time in San Juan
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Since we have to take the 7:00 a.m. flight out of Culebra, we're going to need to find something to do in San Juan until 2:30 p.m. Before anyone suggests taking a ride around Old San Juan, been there, done that, and I have two Chihuahua's to lug around for 6 hrs. If nothing else, I guess we can check bags in and take a taxi to the closest beach!

MJ: does self-satisfaction count for anything?

Kim, Condado has nice, if small, beaches - no idea on dog rules. The area itself is largely forget-able.

Kim:

You can take a cab from the airport to Ocean Park that is a nice beach that locals go, and you can take your dogs with you. I suggest a leash because you will find another dogs at the beach as well.

Ocean park is a residential area that has access to the beach from each one of their streets but I would recomend you enter the beach at Tapia Street because you will find there Hosteria del Mar a small boutique hotel where you can buy lunch and snaks during the day. When you enter Ocean park you will be in Santa Ana Street continue and take third right (Italia St.) and then the third left (Tapia St.) until arriving at the end of Tapia.

taxi drivers know where is ocean park, and also you can ask the taxi driver to pick you up again and drive you back to the air port.

Enjoy Puerto Rico and Culebra!!!!

no offense intended when I referred to Condado as forgettable, it is nice and walkable, it's just off the tourist radar and if it were CA I'd compare it to La Jolla. or like going to Madrid and hanging out in Majadahonda (except for the beach).

Thanks for the suggestions, but the idea of spending all day outside baking with two dogs in tow didn't sound like fun to Butch. We're going to try real hard to catch the 10:00 a.m. flight out of SJU Saturday morning.

It's not all bad working for an airline!!!

We will be looking to kill a little time in SJ in a few weeks also. We'd like to take a cab from SJU to a restaurant for an early dinner/drinks before heading to Isla Grande for a 6:30 flight to Culebra. Can anyone suggest a place? Thanks!

classic, old school in old town, closes by 8 and given the somewhat stiff waiters, I'm sure they mean it:

for nuevo try Ajillo Mojillo in Condado - not sure how early it's open but for a place with a nice view the food's actually good (it's so rare they go hand in hand).

Kristi:

Ajili Mojili opens for lunch and close around 11pm as Richard said the food is really good and also is real Puertorrican cusine. Ajili Mojili is located on Ashford Ave. in Condado

Also you may go to Old San Juan to Fortaleza Street or what they call it now SOFO and there you will find some great restaurants as well .

Condado and Old San Juan are very close to Isla Grande Airport

You may want to consider traffic, you don`t mention how many time you will have, from but if you arrive at SJU at a rush hour a 15-20 min ride from one airport to another may take an hour.

Richard,
We have a 7am flight out of Culebra and our flight to the states doesn't leave until about 3:40pm. We are thinking of going to La Bombonera for breakfast and pastry/coffee. Any advice on that place?

Tricia,

What day of the week? Sunday Brunch at the Parrot Club (very close) is my favorite brunch, ever. Otherwise, La Bombonera has very nice pastries, but I think they lack a liquor license, should you want a Mimosa or Bloody. Caveat: Parrot Club is pricey.

it's been few years, and I can't imagine it's changed any (ha!) the reviews I saw on a quick google all sounded fairly accurate in my recollection (I was a little hungover and sun-blasted the last couple of times frankly).

but it's definitely a classic. dirt cheap, good honest food. others may have more up to date info.

Parrot Club is really good. I've only been for dinner and it was jumping. Unfortunately after a week in the sun my appetite shrivels and I don't think I was able to truly appreciate any of these places.

WE will be flying out on Saturday so Sunday Brunch probably won't work but thanks for the suggestion.

The Normandie Hotel is pet friendly should you want to have lunch there or just hang out. We found this out quite by accident on our first trip with our cat.
