Single Female with Little Dog
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi everyone,

I'm from New York and I've worked myself into exhaustion and insanity. I've been to Culebra before for vacations, but I just quit my job, broke up with my boyfriend and broke my lease - I'm outta here!

I'd like to stay for 1-3 months and regain my sanity starting mid-september. Is there a cottage or small efficiency that I could rent - I'm on a tight budget.

I'd need to ship my bike ahead of time and I have a small dog - I could leave her behind if I had to but it would break my heart.

I'd also like to learn spanish and authentic salsa so if there are any willing teachers on the island please let me know.

Thank you for your help.

Tameka

what a great adventure. there's a thread called "Moving to Culebra" on the board, and Michael quoted $400 and up/month for rent

Thanks Richard!

I checked that thread out, but he didn't give any detail. I'm daring enough to just show up, but would love to know if there is somewhere that would accomodate my canine buddy.

Michael, if you are out there, can you send me any info for the $400 place you mentioned?

Thanks!

Tameka

I chucked everything and "ran away" to California when I was 25 - best thing I ever did. and the best way to re-invent oneself (just don't turn into a caricature of yourself).

There's a chapter in "All the King's Men" where the main character is disillusioned and drives as far away as he can until he gets his head straight, and that pretty much sums it up. He goes as far as he can until he reaches the edge of the continent and can go no further.

I call it working without a net.

I met someone once who went to Culebra for a few months and when I went back a year and a half later was still there.

coming from East coast rents, 400 does sort of sound unreal. can you even get a closet for that much? not in DC.

You have to ask around. Best thing is actually to show up! Kokomo might give you a weekly or biweekly deal until you find something. You can have your dog there.

You should have sublet the NYC apartment. Studios are around 1700 right now and you are lucky if you can fit a queen size bed in it!

Enjoy Culebra!

Thank you both for all of the encouragement, not sure if the objective is to reinvent myself so much as it is to re-discover myself, brush off all the layers of other people's crap and live according to my own inner compass.

I will check out Kokomo - I didn't know I could bring my dog there, that's great news!

Unfortunately, my NYC apartment is in a private house and my landlord won't let me sublet - just another restriction in a restrictive environment...

Re: NY

If you have a lease, by law you are allowed to sublet 2 years out of 4 - legally!

Enjoy Culebra!

Just an update - I've rented the "Dollhouse" property for 15 days in October and I will have my gorgeous companion with me!

Has anyone ever heard of this property and can anyone give me the "down low?".

Thanks! Can't wait!!!!

That's a great property! Wonderful views, etc. Wacky neighbors (with a LOT of dogs running loose) on one side, but lots of great people around. It's tiny, but in a good way. It is on top of a hill, about a mile and a half or so outside of town...I live a little farther down the road and it's about a 20 minute walk into town, ten minutes to the bakery/bar/pinchos on the weekends. (for those of you who know, the dollhouse is Dave (of wireless Dave) and Karen's place, near Glen & Maria's)

Well Tameka, you might have just convinced me to do the same. My family migrated to the States 20 years ago and ever since I have been homesick. I currently work in Corporate America here in Chicago and I am sick of it. I cannot see myself working in freaking office with all the BS politics and the rat race. I have had it. I was thinking about doing what you just did. My most sincere congratualtions on your adeventure. Hopefully maybe we'll sit down and drink a cold Medalla Light and listen to some Z93, old school salsa. I hope you have a blast !!

I rented the "Doll House" August 12-16, 2007. It is a lovely place; however, the home is advertised as having "free wireless internet" and "Direct TV" which unfortunately is not the case. I could not have care less about either one of those except that our two daughters were expecting to email their friends and wanted to watch TV at night. Ordinarily this is not a big deal but they were looking forwar to this since we do not watch TV back home in Virginia.

Aside from that the place is lovely. Great views of the bay and the location enjoys constant winds which was really awesone. You should consider "Casa Robinson" as well. Mr. Robinson has done an outstanding job on his property and he is always there (no exageration) to assist you in any way he can.

You will enjoy this little paradise of an island!

The only place your companion can't go is to Flemenco Beach. Because of the turtles hatching, they don't allow dogs on the beach. :( We took our Chi with us for 10 days, and he loved the warm weather! Mamacitas will let you take him there (if you're dining out) because they have one section that you can sit at if you have a doggie. :)
