Fruit in January
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm wondering about the availability of local fruit in late January. Is there any on Culebra for sale? Is all the fruit for sale in the grocery from far away? I'm begining to dread the prospect of visiting Puerto Rico and Culebra and not being able to eat tropical fruit.

I 'm guessing that many people are lucky enough to have their own fruit trees, would it be possible to buy fruit off of someone??

and finally, what is a pomarrosa, and is that ripe in January??

many thanks,
Becky

I don't know about on Culebra, but on the mainland, your best bet is to stop by a roadside stand to get fruit. The local supermarkets have fruit (apples, oranges, pears etc), but not much tropical fruit.
Pomarosa is also called Malay apple- it has a rose fragrance to the fruit, tastes sort of like a watery apple, but not as sweet as an apple. It is usually ripe about now, but I have never seen any for sale.
All I have right now is citrus- grapefruits, mandarins and chironjas.

Gwenn,
Thanks for the info, I'm crossing my fingers that I can get to a roadside stand... maybe on the way to Playa Fajardo.

by the way what's a chironja?

thanks,
Becky

A chironja is a hybrid of an orange and a grapefruit- tastes like a sweet grapefruit- no tartness. Used to be more common here, but they are a treat now.

I know a good stand on Rt 3 in Canovanas, but you won't pass it if you take Rt 66. You will pass the Amigo supermarket- they usually some unusual tropicals- pineapple guava, mamey zapotes, cherimoya etc.

Across the way from the Amigo there is a stand that is sometimes open.

You will find something.
Enjoy

If you take the scenic route via Loiza, there are also some very good well stocked stands, a little up from your regular roadside vebdor with bags of oranges.

Enjoy Culebra!
