getting to culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,
We're going to Puerto Rico next weekend (May 12th to May 15th). We want to do some diving and relax one day on the beach. We do think Culebra would be the best place to combine both.
But, to get there, can we just buy a plane ticket when we arrive at the airport on May 12th at 11h38 am or we have to purchase it in advance.
While I'm here, do you know if we can contact the turtle patrol when we get there as well or do we have to call ahead.
Thanks
Alex and Kathy

You can buy your plane ticket at the airport, ask them if they can assist you with lodging.
Culebra is very slow paced, you will want more time there.
Ask for the phone # of Recursos Naturales for the turtle watch, there is a crisis in P.R.'s government, so go for the plane, and have fun.

I would buy the tickets in advance because most of the flights that go to Culebra can only accommodate about 7-8 passengers and their are also weight restrictions.

Wow! Do you know what the weight restrictions are?

Is it like parasailing where they cut you off if you are a certain weight? I think with parasailing you can not weigh more than 150. But this was about 6 years ago it might of changed by now.

Hello,

The times we have flown, they have asked us our weight and weighed our luggage. They seat you in the plane for the best weight distribution, you might not sit by they people you are traveling with. The luggage weight is not to exceed 25 or 30 lbs per person depending on the airline. If you go over the luggage weight limit, you will have to pay about $.50 per pound for the excess. Also note that if you go over the luggage weight limit, they might not take your bags on that flight if the total person+luggage limit is reached. You would then be asked to take the 25 lbs of luggage that you need right then, and they will send the rest on the next plane that has room, and this might be another day - this happened to us the first time to Vieques.

If you are bringing dive equipment this could be a concern. If you are just there to relax, 30 lbs is no problem and it makes the other legs of your flight simpler also.

Have a great trip,

Wade and Terry

Hello again,
actually, we wont have a lot of luggage, so weight is not a problem. Our main concern is to know if we can buy our fligth ticket when we get there and fly the same day, because it seems very hard to get in contact with airlines from Canada, we tried phone and email. How much should we expect to pay for a return fligth from either San juan int'l to Culebra or from Isla Grande airport to Culebra.
Thank you all
Alex and Kathy

Hello,

You should keep trying to contact them to confirm a ticket. These are very small airlines with 6-8 passenger aircraft. If they don't have confirmed passengers for a flight on their schedule, they might not be at their counter to sell you a ticket at the airport, and the flight might not be going if they don't have confirmed passengers. If they do have a flight with confirmed passengers and they have room for you on it, then you would be fine. I would not take the chance, unless you are flexible enough to travel on a different day or by a different means if the flight does not work out.

I called Vieques Airlink this morning and they gave me the following phone number you can call to make reservations out of Isla Grande to Culebra. The price should be about $100.00 per person roundtrip. Total flight time should be about 30 minutes. The phone number is 888-901-9247, I was able to get through first thing this morning.

I have been able to make a reservation with Vieques Air Link through their web page http://www.viequesairlink.com/. I contacted them through the web page and then made the reservation in e-mail correspondence. Their e-mail address is <valair@coqui.net>.

Good luck.

Hello everyone,
thanks for your answers. Finally, we booked with MN aviations (100$ return), only them and Isla nena answered our email or phone call. But Isla Nina was 170$ so we decided to go with MN aviation.
Hopefully, we are gonna have a good time.
Thanks again
