Jayme, in defense of the Culebrenses, it is my understanding that the unemployment rate in Culebra is almost zero. The Culebrenses work for the state and municipal governments (schools, ferry service, clinic, police, Department of Natural Resources, fire fighters, etc.), the pharmaceutical manufacturing plant, their own businesses or for some other private business entity (either on the island or the big island). They have to bring workers from Vieques to fill some of the position slots in the manufacturing plant. So, your comments on the strong dependency on “U.S. Government assistance” and laziness are not correct. Culebrenses are proud people and love their island.

Culebra is now on the spot light because of the Travel Channel. I have to admit, that we are on the learning curve when it comes to the service industry and today’s standards are very high (exceeding the five star rating and receiving ISO 9002 quality ratings – just take a look at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai); this is a new ball game for us. But, as I mentioned in my previous message we have to consider every customer feedback in order to improve ourselves and enhance their experience on the island. Feedback alone will not cut it; we have to train and attend seminars on service standards and customer relations. This is one approach that will raise the level of our service industry. My two cents.
