Culebra vs. Vieques
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am planning a honeymoon either to Culebra or Vieques in April. Can any give me an opinion of which would be the better choice? Is there an affordable transportation option to and from the two islands? Gracias!

My choice will always be Culebra, that is for the people, the beaches, and the relaxing that exists there.
However, if you are on a honeymoon maybe you should consider Vieques Wyndham ( it is very expensive though ).
If you are looking for a small family style hotel, then Villa Boheme in Culebra may fit you as well. It is a water front building, with a community kitchen, A/C, private bathroom, and looking to all vessels entering and departing to either Fajardo or St. Thomas.

Enjoy your stay, and may happiness be around you and your spouse.

Culebra hands down. Pick the Wyndam on Vieques and you might as well just pick any other Caribean resort. The tranquility of Culebra is unmatched anywhere and is a great honeymoon spot UNLESS you are city slickers and like to hit the night spots late and like sophisticated meals and wines. If this appeals to you STAY AWAY from Culebra

Culebra is by far the best of what PR has to offer especially the beaches, snorkeling/diving etc. and the resturants are very reasonable. You will find a huge variety of accomodations from the 80.00 range up to exclusive... but you will not find a better place for the money anywhere. Culebra is a secret that has remained in my opinion one of the best places in the Caribbean.

Ok, i need help in choosing a place to stay in culebra for my husband and i. those of you that have been in the island and know your way around, we need your opinion. we are looking for a clean, nice place with private bathroom, a/c, tv, and close to town where perhaps we won't have to drive to get close to the water. we will be staying in the island for 9 days. we are planning on visiting surrounding islands as well. price is important, although we would rather pay a little more to be comfortable. we are not interested in a resort type place.

I vote for Maritza's guest house (in the Shelter section here). She has 2 guest houses, one a bit bigger than the other, and both rooms are clean, private bathrooms, kitchenettes, and tons of privacy!

She's from the Dominican Republic, speaks enough English to get by, but speaks Spanish mostly.

I think her smaller room goes for $80 a night, and it's worth it!

Kim,

thank you for your input. i have seen maritza's guest house pictures in the net and they looked nice. both of us speak spanish so there won't be any problem there. where is her guest house located? is it close enough to the beach we can walk? thanks again.

We stayed at Maritza's and it's not close enough to walk to the beaches (it's approx 2 miles to Flamenco)--her house is in the airport area, about 1 mile from town. Really, the beaches aren't walking distance from almost all the accomodations in Culebra. They are almost all at least a couple miles from the guesthouses. So you could rent bicycle, motorbike, car, or take the publicos (which are cheap).

Culebra, hands down. Flamenco Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in the world and there are apartments right on the beach at Flamneco Beach Villas.

both are very nice but different. Culebra quieter, more rustic. better beaches overall. I have visited 13 times. Been to Vieques five times. Better roads, more choices in accomodations and food. It all depends on what you like. In Culebra Flamenco is huge beach but ZOni is also very beautiful. Turtle watch is nice event. Little nitelife other than great nature sounds after dark. Quiet walks excellent. Snorkeling choices better on Culebra. ON Vieques, beaches have more wave action typcially but there are a lot of them. Phosphorescent bay is worth the trip itelf. G-R-E-A-T. Nice for driving around and experecening a different nature setting somewhat also. Blue beach and garcia Beach are awesome. Esperanza a nifty little village for a day or two, pretty waterfront.
