Car Rentals

Another ?...since I have a hundred!!!
We are flying on the island and thinking of taking a ferry back. We are leaving on a Saturday so the hi speed gets into Old San Juan late...most car rentals are closed there...So if I take the regular ferry and get into Fajardo...what rental companies are in that area that have a location at the SJU airport..so I can drop it off there at the conclusion of my stay on the main island? And what is the main drawback for the regular ferry other than a longer trip? Is it unenjoyable?

Avis has a location in Fajardo that offers one way to San Juan. We made reservations for a Saturday departure and are returning the car to the san juan airport. The Avis location at the San Juan airport is open 24 hours on sat/sun. We are taking the Hi speed ferry to culebra this sat. but agreed that you get back too late for the return trip. We are also going to use that day to visit the rain forest on our way back to san juan. The rental cost IS 95.00 for us. I made the reservation on line.

Lori,

I also checked with Avis about renting a car to go from Fajardo to SJU,
but there where some problems doing it with Avis. The Avis location in
Fajardo is at the El Conquistador Hotel and they don't offer a shuttle service
from the ferry dock to the hotel. They told me, and I talked directly with Avis
at El Conquistador, that I'd have to take a taxi from the dock to their location. I asked if they knew how much that would cost. They said about
$20.00. Avis quoted me a price of $70.00 for their cheapest car, plus the
twenty dollar taxi, 90 bucks altogether for the one way ride. That's a bit
pricey. But there is another way to do it.
L&M Car Rental 787-860-6868 also offers a one way car rental from
Fajardo to SJU. Their price for their cheapest car is $58.80. They said I would need proof of insurance, or it would be another $10.00. I'm not exactly sure what proof of insurance means, and I didn't ask, but I'll check
with my credit card company and see. I'm coming in on the ferry from Vieques, it arrives around 8:00 am. They told me to call them when the ferry
docks and they'd send a car and pick us up, and take us to their location on
Rt. 3. Sounds good to me. I booked with them. Others have told me they've
used L&M with no problems. Thought some of you might wanna know to
avoid some hassels. Happy trails......

Gary

I have used L & M car rentals twice from Fajardo to San Juan with no problems either time. Rates were always as quoted. Rain forest well worth the trip.

That sounds like a good idea..get the car in Fajardo and stop on the way back to San Juan at the rainforest..how far is the trip? Any lunch spots in that area that anyone recommends? And can I hit Luquillo Beach on the swing back too? Or is it out of the way?

There is an ATM in town which I used without a problem. But the only times I paid cash was taking the taxis (publicos). I used my credit/debit card at all the grocery stores, stores, and restaurants. So I don't think you need to worry about bringing a lot of $.

We're heading to San Juan this coming Friday (feb 24) and staying for a couple of days before heading to Culebra. Does anyone have good advice on how to get to Fajardo from San Juan?
