Culebra to El Yunque... worth a day trip?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi - my family and I will camping on Culebra for 10 days in February. However also want to visit the El Yunque rain forest during out trip. Is it worth a day trip from Culebra to El Yunque?

We are considering jumping on the early ferry from Culebra to Fajardo, renting a car, heading up to El Yunque and going on some of the hikes. Then returning the car and grabbing a late ferry back to Culebra.

Is that just stupid? Is it too far or too much of a headache for one day?

Thanks for any info....

-jt

Not only does this sound very attainable ... it sounds very enjoyable. My memory fails me at times, but El Yunque isn't very far away from Fajardo. I seem to recall about 20 minutes to get to the "base" and then another 20-plus minutes to drive up through the very big hills! Have a great time!

Check the ferry schedule before you go ... it sometimes changes without advanced warning. The current schedule would allow catching the 630am from Culebra and 700pm back.

Thank you Frank that is encouraging. I think your memory still works regarding the distance from Fajardo to El Yunque. And we will be sure to check the ferry schedule that day.

One more question-

We will have a car/Jeep while on Culerbra - should we just take that to Fajardo and El Yunque? I know we'd have to take the cargo ferry but does anybody know if Culebra car rental folks are cool with taking the car off the island?

thanks again

Jay Tee,

Leave your rental on Culebra for a host of reasons. First, it costs more to ferry it over and back than it does to rent one in Fajardo. Second, your insurance is voided by using the ferry. Third, commercial cargo takes precedence over private cars, if I'm not mistaken, and you can get bumped.

Enjoy the rainforest.

Thank you Doug - That's what I feared/figured and the exact reason I asked the question. Passenger ferry and a 1 day car rental in Fajrdo it is!!!!! Can't wait.

Jay Tee -

Why not visit El Junque on your way to Culebra? I assume you're flying into San Juan? From the airport, go to El Junque for the afternoon, spend the night in Fajardo, and then go to Culebra the next day. That seems a lot easier to me than trying to day-trip it in the middle of our stay.

Just my 2¢

Happy Diving!

I was just going to suggest hitting El Yunque on the way there as well. We've done that and it was one of the highlights of our trip. It's truly beautiful. We stayed at the Fajardo Inn which was simple but quite nice. We actually spent two nights there since we arrived in the evening and planned on doing a lot of hiking. It was a good decission for us since we were quite beat after many hours of hiking. All I wanted was a soak in the jacuzzi and a margarita. It really depends on how much hiking you want to do. You shuold try to make it to the tower (it's on the map). The view is incredible!
Have fun and let us know what you do.

We visited El Yunque twice, once on the way to Culebra and once on the way back. Both times we did a one-way rental using Avis (they have an agent at the El Conquistador Resort) as they were the cheapest. I believe you have to call to find out the one-way drop-off charges. We stayed at the Fajardo Inn both times. The rooms in the newer section of the hotel are quite nice and have great views. Don't go for the cheaper rooms in the old hotel -- the beds are terrible and the rooms are noisy! Not worth the few dollars saved, IMHO.

You can see photos from my last trip, including shots of El Yunque and Mount Britton (the tower Zoe refers to above) here:

Have fun and good luck!

Wow, great pictures, thank you for sending us the link (I am Jay Tee's much better half). We can't wait to go in less than two weeks now. We have decided to visit El Yunque and Old San Juan at the end of the trip. Unless J decides we cannot possibly leave the beaches of Culebra, in which case we will have a great reason to come back!

Thanks to everyone for all the great information. This pre-trip communication has been a lot of fun. Culebra sounds perfect to us and we can't wait to get there.
