Jeep necessary on Culebra?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I will be travelling to Culebra on 2/28. Is a 4WD or Jeep really necessary or is a regular compact car sufficient? I don't plan to do a lot of driving, just seems like we need it to get around. Staying near Ensenads Honda Bay and Flamenco Beach. I do want to visit Flamenco Beach, Zoni Beach and hopefully a hike/tour thru the Wildlife Refuge. We may also kayak and rent bikes, so I don't think we need to spend the extra money on a Jeep.

Also, what's everyone's opinion on ferry vs. plane to Culebra? I'm staying in San Juan for a few days before heading to Culebra. I'm all for budget transit, but I'm concerned I'll get seasick on the ferry, as I've read posts about the ride being quite choppy. I tend to get carsick fairly easily, especially on windy roads, so I'm a little nervous about a choppy ferry ride.

Thanks for your help, looking forward to my first PR experience!

No, you won't need a Jeep or 4wd.

As far as plane vs ferry, you seem to have answered you own question already LOL!

We flew and I'd suggest that mode of travel simply because it gets you there quickly and the overview of the area you get from a small plane can't be beat.

Have a great time.

If you're planning on going to Soldier's Point, don't take a small compact car. We rented in SJU, and the road to Soldier's Point is awful. The front of the car hit a huge boulder, and I thought at that minute that we had bought ourselves a foreign car. I was scared to death we had hit the oil pan or radiator!

Anyway, that's the only place that the road is really bad.

What about VW Thing from Dick & Cathie? What are those like? Are they reliable and as good with the roads, potholes, roads to Soldier's Point or Zoni Beach, etc. as Jeeps?

I haven't driven a Thing on the island, but I used to own one years ago and took it on many a jeep trail. It was no 4x4, but it got you there.

I will try the following regarding ferry vs jeep.
Go to the ferry teminal very early, before 0700. Take a look at the sea, if possible ask questions, look at the weather info, etc.
Seas 2 4 feet, are very good, and the ferry is a 90footer boat, so... unless you are too sensible to movement, try that.
Esle, the Fajardo airport is about 20 minutes or less from the ferry terminal, and there are always planes.

Jeeps are not necessary but go for a samari / jeep and you won't bne sad you did.
Life is too short to not enjoy your self and this type of vechicle will make a difference for you on Culebra.
