Debbie,

What an eye you have! I lifted the shots of you and Lewis to add to my New Years album. I'm planning to send the url to my companions from the trip.

Thanks for the memories!

Doug

Underwater, I use a Nikon Coolpix 4300 in an Ikelite housing with one DS-125 strobe. Topside, a Nikon D50 digital SLR.

Happy Diving!

We are heading to Culebra for our first time in two weeks. Looking at your pictures was great! We are so excited and they are beautiful. Thank you for sharing. We are staying at the ocean view. Our main interest is snorkeling and diving. Do you have any recommendations for a dive shop and favorite places to eat? ( during the week We have noticed that alot of places are closed) I looked at your other pictures also. Loved Belize and Bonaire which are other places we are looking to go. Have you been to Cabo Pulma in Mx. It was very remote and beautiful last February.

See TO DO on the left navigation of this site. There is one dive shop in town - Culebra Divers, and there is one other person that takes people out diving - Taz Hamrick. He's listed under Aquatic Adventures. I have dived with him, but not off his boat or under his supervision, so I can't offer an opinion on his operation. We have only ever dived with Culebra Divers, and find their operation to be a good one. In the interest of full disclosure, the owners are now very good friends of ours. Culebra Dive Shop, also listed, no longer takes divers out. I also don't think they rent tanks or anything dive-related, so I don't know why they are still listed. Nuevo Mini Mas rents tanks and weights only.

Bonaire and Belize are two of my top favorite dive destinations, but we seem to be stuck on Culebra. We love it so much, we haven't dived anywhere else in a long while. Bonaire's diving is unrivaled by any other place in the Caribbean. We went there on our honeymoon, and returned in 2002. The people of Belize are the sweetest people I have ever met, and the diving was also nice there, although I will say, on Ambergris Cay, there did not seem to be an abundance of fish (that was in 2000).

I wrote trip reports for each of these destinations over on scubadiving.com some time ago. See:

and
http://dive.scubadiving.com/members/tripreports.php?s=180

I have only been to Cozumel, Mexico. I have never heard of Cabo Pulma. I'll have to look into that.

As for favorite places to eat, there are few choices, so you'll end up eating at many of the establishments listed on this site. I don't have a particular favorite - I like them all. I would caution you not to put too much weight into the opinions of the locals. Some of them are tired of eating at the same places over and over, and they may not give good recommendations based on their boredom. Just go, and eat and form your own opinions. :)

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Thanks Debbie for all of your advice. We leave this Saturday and I can't wait! We are all set with Taz for diving on Mon & Tues. We decided to rent a Jeep from Jerry for Wed, Thur, and Friday. William from The Ocean View has been wonderful and has offered to pick us up from the Ferry Dock when we arrive. Thanks again to everyone for the great advice to help us plan this trip. Lori

Debbie, you're pictures are awesome! I'm in deep envy of your underwater pics. Thanks for posting your setup. The strobe makes a world of a difference. I use an Olympus setup, and I'm now on the hunt for a strobe setup for our trip in March. Your pictures have inspired me. =)

Kris -

When will you be there in March? Are you diving with Culebra Divers? We are diving with them March 11 and 12.

Happy Diving!

We will be there March 2 & 3, but we are only snorkelers. But I love taking underwater photos while snorkeling. Without a strobe my photos are dull and the colors do not 'pop'. (here's a sample from a trip elsewhere: http://imageevent.com/kajugo/coralgardensreef2005)
My goal someday is to learn how to dive and be certified. =)

Enjoy your diving trip!
Kris
