Fishing from the beach
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi all- We're making our first trip to Culebra 3rd week in Feb. Trying to get info. on where to bring my 6 yr. old son, Matt to get some good fishing action from the beach, rocks, dock, etc. Easy fishing. Any suggestions out there? Where should we go, what should we expect to catch, what kind of bait, lures, etc. Catching fish and bringing them home for a barbecue would make his trip alone! Thanks in advance for your suggestions

I've never caught a fish in Culebra, only scoped them snorkling. A couple of basics to remember: almost the entire west coast, along with several of the outlying cayos, or keys, are protected reserves - no fishing allowed. As of last year, fishing licenses are required. I know that bonefishing is excellent in the flats on the east end of the island, but that is, I believe, highly specialized flyfishing...not pole fishing like I did when I was kid. Hopefully, someone who actually knows more about what you're after will speak up here. BTW, there are some huge tarpons cruising the Dinghy Dock...probably for the scraps. It'd take you AND your boy to reel them in.

Good luck!

Doug

Locals catch fish from the town dock in the bay. You do not even need a pole. Mostly pargo (snapper), which is very good eating :)
Chicken scraps from last night's dinner make excellent bait. Or you can buy more 'specialized' bait at the pescaderia.

Enjoy Culebra!
