Yummy food places
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello everyone!

My husband and I will be in Culebra (we're virgins to the island). ::wink:: December 25 - January 3. I was wondering if anyone on here could recommend any great places to eat and drink. We will be staying at Mamacitas.

And one more question, where is the big hang out for New Year's? The people at Mamacitas told us that it's their bar, but I was just wondering if there was another place as well?

Thanks so much for your help.

Happy Holiday's!!!

Danielle :)

Hello Danielle,

The area near the Ferry dock is the main area for New Years Eve. Mamacita's is very close to there.

Our favorite place to eat is the Dinghy Dock. People have always been very friendly to us there, they have a beautiful view of the bay, they have great food (like any restaurant they have good and bad days), there is a good mix of locals and tourists, and there is always a nice breeze across the bay. There are little places to eat all over the island, many very small and very good. Barbera Rosa's is very good. Mamacita's has gotten much better in the past year. It has a fun bar, music, and good food. Sometimes it gets a little warm there because there is no breeze, but it is a fun place.

Have a great time,

Wade and Terry

Thanks Wade and Terry!!!

Will definitely try the Dinghy Dock! Sounds great! :)

When was the last time you were in Culebra? It seems you know a lot! :)

Have a great day!

Danielle :)

Hi Danielle,

The last time we were there was March. We are hoping to get there this March also, but we don't know yet. We try to get there a couple times per year but it doesn't always work out, we hope to retire there in about 12 years.

You can e-mail us with specific questions if you want, or the forum works too.

Loved Mamacitas....lots of locals at the bar (talked with some guy with no teeth for about an hour). Barbara Rosas had good homemade food....expect a wait though as she cooked all the food herself unless its changed. Great to watch the fish swim by at Dingy Dock (kids loved it). All in all, the food is good but keep in mind you are not in a big city. It is solid tasty food but not fancy. If you do it right, you will have been out in the sun all day and nothing will look better than a tall cool drink, some well cooked fish, and a happy talkative setting.

For the best food... look for the locals, and they are not that expensive either.
Mamacitas is very good too, and a nice place to relax,

Also Juanita Bananas just opened up and has excellent food! It's bring your own, but so it Mamacitas these days.

Dear Jose, I agree with you on the food, but it is not bring your own anymore. They finally got their liqour licence. You can still bring your own wine and they will charge a corking fee.

This is a great thread. It sounds like some of the local places are the best and most relaxed to eat at. Are there any other more "upscale" dining places if my husband and I decided to splurge a bit one evening?

Also, how much would you plan on spending on food each day? We get breakfast every morning where we are staying, but wondering about lunch and dinner.

Thanks so much. We are off to Culebra for the first time in seven short weeks now. It will be wonderful to escape the New England winter by then!

Alyssa

I agree with all your opinions on restaurants. But, my absolute favorite during this past week was La Bahia. Family-owned and operated, they served great seviche, criollo, grilled langosta and mofongo. They're very friendly and accommodating. One note: it's not the place to go if you want a quiet American dinner. This place is filled with happy Puerto Rican families enjoying themselves. I thought it was great.

For a more "upscale" dining experience, try Club Seaborne. A tad under, would be Bahia Marina. I had excellent meals at both places. Both around the Fulladosa area (see http://www.virtualculebra.com)

Enjoy Culebra!

We though Juanita Bananas was pretty upscale last February.

I also agree that La Bahia was a real treat.

Danielle--I hope by this time you have already been to puerto rico and can give me some advice--we are leaving Jan 22nd and would like to know how the crime situation really is. Can we leave stuff on the beach and not have to worry about it? Is renting a scooter a good way to get around Culebra?
Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks so much
Julie

My wife and I left stuff on the beach and felt totally safe. Depending on when you go to Zoni you might be the only two people there.

La Bahia is great for seafood and a real Puerto Rican atmosphere.
