Camping outside Flamenco
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Does anyone know if camping is acceptable on the other Culebra beaches, e.g. Playa Zoni? I know there are no facilities, but I'd like to know if I will encounter any problems with just camping on the beach.

I have the same question about the minor beaches all over Vieques.

Any input is heartily welcome.

Thanks!

Scroll down to the topic "Kayaking" and read the related post Teresa Tallevast replied to. Zoni Beach is a prime turtle nesting area and cannot be used for camping. Only Flamenco Beach can be used for camping.

Thanks. That post answered some questions, but not all.

1. When is turtle nesting season? This is usually a seasonal affair.

2. One of those posts said "no camping on any beaches" but did not say why. Is it because they are ALL turtle beaches (I don't want to cause turtle problems), or is it because Uncle Sam said, "no camping on the beach", or is it because you can get fined by the parks service or what?

All of the surrounding beaches are turtle nesting sites, some more so than others including Zoni. Ms. Tallavest has put a lot of effort into conservation of wildlife habitats on the entire island, and this includes limiting camping to Flamenco Beach only. I would suggest that you contact her directly if you have further questions. She is the best source of information for rules and regulations of this kind. Those of us that know and love Culebra would like to preserve its natural beauty, so we would appreciate campers and visitors as a whole sticking to the rules. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks. Teresa actually contacted me privately. Please rest assured that I will not be camping on the outer beaches, based on what I am hearing.

Thanks, Phillip. You'll see when you get there why we wish to preserve the beauty of Culebra. In fact, you will notice many locals with bumper stickers that say "Preserve What's Left"

Happy Diving!
