Airport Hotel in San Juan
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are arriving at 4:30 pm on Jan 6th, and will probably need to spend the night in San Juan and travel to Culebra on the 7th. We are looking for a hotel that has shuttle service to and from the airport. Any ideas would be appreciated. We plan on doing a tour of Old San Juan if possible on the 7th and then either flying to the island or taking the ferry from San Juan. Also we would like to fly but have a problem with the flight weight restrictions due to our scuba gear. Will they allow you to pay for extra weight and if so how much? Otherwise we will have to take the ferry. thanks in advance for the help. Can't wait to get there. Jean

Hello Jean,

You should look into staying the night right in Old San Juan. It is an awesome place to see. If you stay there, you can walk to the forts and other historical sights and all the great little restraunts and bars. It's much more fun to "tour" Old San Juan on foot than on a bus looking out the window. There are weight limits on the little planes, and if they have room you can just pay the extra $.50/pound for the extra. The downside is if they don't have room (they won't know until everyone is checked in with their luggage) you have to leave some of your stuff and they will bring it on a later flight that has room. If it's your dive stuff, you might not feel comfortable leaving it behind. Don't bring your weights or tanks, you might not need a wet suit, you can rent them if needed.

Have a great time!

Sheraton Old San Juan for $130 to $180 a night. You can walk across the street to Pier 2 and take the fast ferry in the morning.

Hello Jean and David

We stayed at Hotel Milano in Old San Juan. Nothing fancy, but a clean quiet room for $90. They we very friendly and helpful at the front desk, arrainged our taxi to the airport, and they had a cool restaurant and bar on the roof. They have pictures on their web site, and they are also near the pier (but not right across the street). They are a block from a park with a fountain, two blocks from one fort, and 8 blocks from another fort (El Morrow).

If you watch the movie "Assasins" with Sylvester Stalone and Antonio Banderras, many of the last scenes are fillmed in the area and you will recognize the park and some of the old buildings in Old San Juan, right by the hotel.

I would highly suggest an overnight stay or two at least in OSJ. Hotel Milano is a good choice as Terry and Wade mentioned. Stayed there for (3) nights back in May '05. There are many options of restaurants, shopping, historical interests, etc... in the Calle San Francisco, Fortaleza street areas of OSJ. We rearranged our taxi service to Luis Marin Int'l. from Hotel Milano. Piece of cake....

Have a wonderful trip!

Thanks so much for all of the help and advice. Believe it or not I have never lived in a large enough town to take a taxi. Although I have taken busses and subways, I have never taken a taxi in a city. Is it very expensive?, and is it per person or trip? How much should I tip? Sorry to be so ignorant, but I guess everyone has to start somewhere. Thanks again for all the help. Both places sound great. I am still not sure weather we will fly or take the ferry, but the ferry sounds like it might work out best with our luggage.

Hi Jean,

For the Taxi from the airport to the Hotel, you just go to the taxi area at the airport and tell the attendant where you want to go. They will give you part of a multi-part form with the destination and the price and give another part of the form to a driver. The driver will take you to the destination for that price, and a tip is up to you. 20% seems about right. The ride will be about $16 no matter how many people (within reason), if you give them a $20 they will be very satisfied. For the ride from the Hotel back to the airport, if you chose to fly to Culebra, you simply tell the clerk at the Hotel that you need a ride to the airport and they will arrange it for you. Prices should be the same for the trip back.

Have a great time, and happy diving

Wade and Terry

Thanks again for all the help. I tried both of the hotels suggested, but one was full and the other needs 2 night stays. Have found a place called Tres Palms a few miles out that looks nice that I may try. Only problem is that I just heard from Jose Guzman that the high speed ferry hasn't come to Culebra in a week, so I may have to change my plans again. This is getting pretty frustrating, so I'm really grateful for all the help and advice. Culebra must be a very friendly place!! (once you figure out how to get there) Jean

Hi Jean,

Your best option is to call the Fast ferry at 787-724-6600 and ask. Things change constantly in Culebra.

Enjoy your stay in Culebra,

Wade and Terry
