Transportation to Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I was thinking of taking the "public bus system" from San Juan to Rio Piedras, and then to Fajardo, but I just saw something that said they rarely allow passengers with luggage. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so, the cheapest way to get to Culebra from San Juan?

Thanks!

They do allow luggage. Sometimes there is not that much space for it and you might have to squeeze in, but that is part of the fun!

Enjoy Culebra!

Using "publicos" is the cheapest way to get to Culebra.
You can get the bus from airport (there is a bus stop outside the airport) to Rio Piedras. From Rio Piedras "publicos" station you can get to Fajardo dock.
The problem is when "publicos" drivers see a tourist or a couple of tourists, they try to arrange an "express" (faster but more expensive) trip only for you, for 20-25$.
When you get on a "publico" and you want the cheapest fare, ask for an ordinary trip (not "express"), unless you're in late for your ferry/plane and you can share the amount with other travellers. The last one could be a good solution for the return trip, to go directly from Fajardo to SJ Airport, because at Fajardo you have more chances to find other travellers going to the airport.

To save yourself time and aggravation, the best way to Culebra from the San Juan area is to fly from Isla Grande airport for about $90-95 roundtrip. The total flight time is about 30 minutes. There is nothing worse than carrying luggage on a crowded bus, then have to switch to another bus. Another thing to consider is that the ferry to Culebra is not the most reliable mode of transportation. They are constantly breaking down. You can also fly from Farado to Culebra for $40-50 roundtrip. Spend the extra money get rid of the aggravation and have fun.

I agree with the above writers, though would caution to take into consideration the date of travel and amount of time available to enjoy Culebra.

At certain times of the year this mode of travel (Publicos & ferry) is less advisable.

I experienced one such time a few years ago in the spring. On meeting a few friends unexpectedly we deciding to seize the opportunity and share our island with them.

We were eagerly anticipating basking in Paradise for a day or so…
Paradise if only for a night is still Paradise.

Then we began a traveling odyssey with everything that could possibly go wrong going wrong. A little exasperating when you spend more time traveling to Culebra than actually enjoying Culebra.

My lesson....when time is essential flying out of San Juan is advisable.

Though I must agree the journey to fajardo & ferry ride, "the whole experience" is part of the lure of Culebra...and should be experienced at least once. Though please let’s keep this a secret "wink- wink"

With this in mind, would someone share what traveling into fajardo and the subsequent ferry ride into Culebra can be on New Years Eve.

A group of friends will be traveling at the wee hours of the morning on December 31. .

With much appreciation and thanks.

JJ
