Culebrita
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'll be in Culebra on January 16th and was thinking of taking a day trip to Culebrita. Can anyone tell if the water taxi should drop me off at any particular side of the island. I'm very interested in spending the day on a beautiful beach more than anyhting else.

Of course... some of the water taxis may take you there...
Be sure to carry enough water, and some food.
MOST celular phones do not work there. Remember that.

Jose, the reason I asked the question is that I read where a water taxi left a couple at a part in Culebrita where they had to walk from one end of the island to get to the beach. I just want to make sure that the water taxis leave you where the nice beach is located.

Sometimes it depends on the weather. If there is a strong NE swell they might not be willing to take you to Tortuga Beach (where you want to go). On the other hand if it is easy to get into that beach, You might not enjoy solitude. Especially on weekends the power boats like to use the moorings in there.

So either way, the usual practice of the water taxis to drop you on the near side of Culebrita is not such a bad one! That beach is always deserted except maybe a couple of idyllic sailboats. The walk over to Tortuga is short and the captain of the taxi will be able to tell you whether it is crowded or not (chances are if your ride to Culebrita was rough you will enjoy solitude :))

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael, thank you for your input, that is the exact response I was looking for. I wasn't sure of the name of the beach in Culebrita (Tortuga).

To say that you must walk "from one side of the island to the beach" is a bit of an overstatement. It is maybe a ten minute walk on fairly level ground. You will need shoes to guard against "prickers".

It would probably take the water taxi longer to drive you around to the beach than it would for you to walk from the "near side" of Culebrita.

Well worth the short walk since this is what you'll find at the end of it:

I have been told about the "jacuzzis" in Tortuga Bay...What exactly are they and where are they located?

We will be visiting in December, arriving on a Sunday via sailboat and staying for about 5-6 days... We plan on starting off at Carlos Rosario off the north west side of Culebra.....are there mooring balls there also?

Anything else we should make sure we see?

I am sure glad I found this site..it has been most helpful. Thank you too all and we look forward to our visit.

The jacuzzis you mention are more commonly called "The Baths", because they resemble the feature of the same name on Virgin Gorda. We were there on a relatively calm day so the 'jacuzzi' action was minimal. The rock formation is like a series of bathtubs where fish are occasionally trapped and you can snorkel. It is located to the extreme left end of Tortuga, as you face the beach from the water.

Another feature of this beach is the turtle grass bottom. Boaters and other recreators are cautioned to not disturb this, because it provides foraging for the famous sea turtle population after which this beach is named. If you are lucky enough to be there when it is uncrowded, snorkle quietly out to this grass and you may see one or more.

Once, when I rode out there in a boat, I was relating to a friend how I had seen a couple. He was skeptical and cynical. I loved it when we shut down the motor and within seconds, four greens surfaced around us.

Enjoy,
Doug

I was in the baths this year and a huge wave (12 foot plus) crashed into where I was swimming and landed on top of me. The ocean was very rough that day so be careful. I am a surfer who doesnt underestimate the ocean and it was a bit scary even to me.

I have seen moorings at Tortuga, I think that is the only place where they have moorings. Any other place you'll have to use the anchor.

A fisherman drowned in the baths a few years ago when the seas were rough and he slipped while walking across the shallows toward the pools. FWS has placed warning signs at the site. It is not open to the public, but people go there anyway while walking past the signs. Please know that it can be extremely dangerous.
