Shark Pen?! What do you mean by Shark Pen?

Thanks to you both for your help with my questions.

Next round of questions:

1. When traveling around the island by jeep, how safe & feasible is the parking for the more remote areas?

2. Can you just rent fishing equipment & fish off of any beach on the island? Any recommended hot spots?

3. Is there an opportunity to see bioluminescence?

4. Is there horseback riding anywhere on the island?

Thanks again for all you help.

Andres

Don't worry about parking in remote areas. Crime on the island is very very low.

The remains of an old rock walled shark pen are at the far eastern end (furthest from the parking lot) of Flamenco. Apparently the Navy used to keep sharks there and tested shark repellents on them. Anyway, just walk into the water between the two remaining rock walls and turn right. You'll see a really good coral wall on your right.

Try talking to Butch at Culebra Boat Rentals about fishing. You can not fish in some areas that are designated wildlife preserves.

La Pela bay AKA Puerto del Manglar is supposedly bioluminescent, but I've never seen it myself.

You can horesback ride anywhere on the island provided you can catch a horse. { ;^)

Please do not ride horseback on beaches. Sea turtles, depending on the species, usually nest either in vegetation or in sand near the vegetation and nest contents are easily destroyed by the weight of horses, cattle, vehicles, etc. Horseback riding is actually illegal on Zoni, Brava, and Resaca beaches March-November. Also deep footprints left in soft sands of Zoni, Brava, and Resaca beaches can entrap sea turtle hatchlings trying to make their way from their nest to the water's edge. So a good rule of thumb May-September is to walk as much as is possible below the high tide line on those 3 beaches so that your footprints will be washed away by the incoming tide. Sea turtles nest on the smaller islands too so we ask that people please observe these concerns there, as well. We'll be happy to orient you on good nature experiences here in areas safe for the public if you call our office to set up a visit with our staff. 787-742-0115. Thank you for your cooperation!
