If large resorts is what you seek, you may wish to look into the big island of Puerto Rico, or elsewhere in the Caribbean. Culebra is known for laid back, small guest houses and secluded (because they aren't developed) beaches.

I know a couple of new places have opened since my last visit on New Years of 2004, It's possible that they may offer something closer to what you describe.

Culebra does not have large hotels, nor beach front villas.
Should you be interested, contact Villa Boheme, it is a water front small hotel, with community kitchen, A/C, and Comunity Cable TV.
It is a water front, but not beach front.
If you are looking for a beach front, contact a house near Zoni, but be prepared to pay more than 2000.00 for the week, and they do not rent for less than 5 or 7 days.
Else, stay in the main island, we do not want you talking bada about our beatiful island.
In addition, Culebra is a very slow paced living, if you are in a rush, do not go there.

Nice stay...

Look into Tamarindo Estates. You will have the pool to yourselves and Flamenco beach is a three minute car ride away. The beach is for snorkeling only but it was the best we found on the island. Even liked it better than Culebrita for snorkeling. It is secluded....lots of cats and chickens running around with no traffic or noise. Villa Boheme looked nice but it is right off the main road near downtown.....wouldnt want that with kids. Bahia Marina is brand new with a nice pool but it looked like an older clientel.
This was all observed last week by myself.

You may also wish to look into Costa Bonita, a rather new resort-style hotel property on Culebra. It's sort of a cross between the small island fel of Culebra and the larger resorts of PR. It is all studio & 1 BR villas that are brand new and well-appointed. There is a great pool, full-service restaurant and they may now offer water activities (snorkel, sailing, etc.). I believe their website is www.costabonitaresorts.com. My girlfriend and I stayed there over New Year's week and had a wonderful time. Everyone was very friendly and curteous. Culebra is a wonderful place to visit, enjoy!

I'd be careful about Costa Bonita, we just stayed at Villa Boheme and they did a great job. We took a trip to Culebrita, and on our boat ride, when we passed Costa Bonita, they told us how the hotel was 50% booked and had no water. I can't confirm this, but this is what they told us. I don't think many people have a good feeling toward Costa Bonita, seeing as how the whole island is small Villa's and this place has like 200 and some rooms I think. The places are brand new, but it seems they are going against the culture of the island. They told us that if they are fully occupied, it would increase the population of the island by 25%, this should give you some idea of how big these units really are.
