Do you need to have your passport to travel to Puerto Rico from the United States?

Thanks!

PR is a territory of the US - why would you need a passport if you're a US citizen??

I think it all depends on where you are travelling from :)

Even from the US Virgin Islands, even thought they are also US territory, you will be asked for a passport. You definitely will need one coming from a foreign country, no matter what citizenship you carrry.

And from the US, you most likely will be asked for one leaving the States. you do not have to show one upon arrival in PR, since it is US territory. You are totally within your right to travel with any picture ID. But it makes things easier to have one at the airport ever since 9/11.

From the US a driver's license will get you through customs (which officially you are not really clearing), but you might encounter more trouble than it is worth.

Enjoy Culebra!

No. PR is part of the US and they carry US passports there.
Still, you might want to have one if you have it handy just because it is the best form of ID.

The most accurate response is from ADMIN ( Michael )
It all depends where are you comming from.
Think of it as in the continental USA. It is the same.

You don`t need a passport to travel from continental U.S. to Puerto Rico. P.R. is an U.S. territory, with your state drivers license will be enough. Also you can travel from P.R. to the U.S. virgin island without a U.S. passport as long as you call or stop by the nearest U.S. Customs office for clearence you will have no problem at all. Remeber all puertoricans are U.S. citizens and traveling to P.R. would be the same than traveling from one state to an other, the only difference is that is no road. If you have any question go to www.cbp.gov and get the San Juan Customs office phone no. and verify before you travel to P.R. Good Luck!
