Welcome to the Caribbean, Laura. While I have never been stranded for 6 hours, I have waited at the Flamenco and Isla Nena ticket counters past flight time, with nobody to give me a clue. Once, at Munoz, our 8 AM flight didn't depart until 10:30 while we waited for someone to show up with cash to pay for fuel. It was also a bit unsettling to have the ticket agent at Fajardo hop in and fly the plane, back in 1996.

Once on Culebra, your metabolism slows considerably and, along with it, you gain a tolerance for a slower pace. Frankly, that mellowness is what you pay to acheive. My advice? Start that mellowing process in San Juan and find the bar. Better yet, slip a couple beers or a pint into your carry-on (bar hours are as undependable as flight times). The buzz will come in handy on your final approach to Culebra International.

A couple final thoughts. Every pilot I have flown with was extraordinarily talented, even the one-man airline in Fajardo. Also, most flights were no more than a half hour late, so the law of averages is on your side.

BTW, I am jealous. I'm off island until at least May, unless I hit Powerball.

Doug
