Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are going to Culebra for our honeymoon for a week in July, and can't wait. Just curious what everyone's favorite memories of Culebra are and what activities were not to be missed while we are there.

Seeing the bay so calm and flat in the morning and evenings at the Dinghy Dock overlooking the bay with the lights across the harbor. Be sure to ask Judy to make a Woo Woo! and Billy to make a Billy's special.

One day on Flamenco when the waves were pretty strong and were crashing all around us on the sand. We found one little point in the sand where the waves were coming in on both sides and we build a little sand burm around us.

Walk up to the old helicopter pad and look down and see the amazing views of Reseca beach and off to St. Thomas.

Sit on the sand on Culebrita and enjoy seeing no one else - only the one you love.

Just a few of the wonderful things to experience on Culebra.

Enjoy the discovery.

there's really no one, tangible thing, you can really pin down.

It's greater than the sum of its parts.

Culebra rule#1: Don't talk about Culebra!

Hello,
We were in Culebra two years ago and the whole experience was great.
So great that we are going back for a couple of days in december 2004.
The beach, Flamenco, is a great place to be, nice white sand, beautiful view.
I can go on but you have to experience it your self.
By the a nice honeymoon.

Calm down there "x", I wasn't planning on broadcasting anything I find out from this forum before my trip to the mass media. Culebra is still our secret... I was just wondering what peoples favorite activities were. If you don't have one then that's fine, but in that case you should save your reply for another forum. It was a harmless question that anyone who has been to Culebra could weigh in on.

We also spent our honeymoon on Culebra in April. We both agree that the best thing was visiting the various beaches on the island and just be astounded by the beauty. I can't think of a better place to spend a honeymoon. We think of Culebra everyday.

Tom, no offense intended, but Culebra can feel like you've been let in on one of life's little secrets.

I realize most people aren't even interested in a place unless it has the same reassuring stores and restaurants they can find at home and hence no need to worry about a million cheap t-shirt shops opening in Dewey any time soon.

You'll need (or used to anyway) 4-wheel drive, but be sure to check out Playa Zoni, less populated than Flamenco and a nice view of Culebrita.

Congrats on your wedding. What a great place to honeymoon. I suggest spending the money and take a water taxi out to Culebrita or another cay. It is beautiful, quiet, and completely deserted....unless you're there when my husband and I bring all our kids back to see the island (don't worry, we're still saving up for the plane tickets.)
We also loved flying there. The view from the plane was spectacular. The laid back life is what makes Culebra so magical.
By the way, there is a bio-bay on Culebra, but it is not one that has easy access to and I don't know of any company-type planned trip. But you can do it yourself with a kayak. I think you could look up past forum chats and read about it.

You know longer need a 4w vehicle to get to Zoni .. it was nice and paved when I was there in December. A must that was not mentioned yet - Punta Soldado. Very good snorkeling although you do need a 4w dr. to get there as the road washes out alot ... rental car companies don't want you going there but it is very doable - just drive slow.

Good to know Jim, was worried we wouldn't get back up the hill last time.

Where does the road to Punta Soldado usu. wash out? Near enough to hike the last bit? Way back towards Dewey? or just no way to really predict?

We have more time this go-round and I'd like to check that out.

Thanks

When I was there over New Years', there was about a 1/2 mile hike from the crest of the hill on the road past Fulladoza to Punta Soldado. We offered rides to a few ladies who were walking, and only the one who was a bit gimpy accepted. 4 wheel drive isn't necessary, but high clearance is, to clear the ruts. With careful navigation we made it in a Thing. For those who haven't seen Soldado lately, someone has really put forth some effort to clean up the flotsam and it is gorgeous.

the wash out area on the road to soldado is probably the last 5th of the drive there. you could hike it w/o a large problem. However, if you are concerned the drive might be comparable to the old drive to zoni -- don't be. The Punta Soldado drive is much more tame -- I refused to drive down the old Zoni path but Soldado has never given me much fear.

Some of my favorite memories are the beautiful sunrises over the Ensenada Honda (bay). Having breakfast at Dinghy Dock and watching the sailboats come in is a must. I agree with another post that a hike to the old helicopter landing site to take in the breathtaking views of Playa Flamenco cannot be expressed in words.

I also loved watching the school children come to school out my window at Casa Ensenada in the mornings.

You can't miss the privacy of Zoni Beach. My boyfriend built us a little hut with the fallen palm branches which was a super way to spend the afternoon!

Happy Hour with the locals at Dinghy Dock is very informative. Say hello to Judie for me! You really can find out what not to miss.

Don't forget to snorkel, snorkel, snorkel.....

Check out my post in the snorkling thread!

Also, New Year's on the ferrydock plaza 12/31/01 was awesome. My Culebrense friend had a European cut fancy shirt with 4 pockets in the front. I have picture of him and his wife, me and my wife, all wearing glow-in-the-dark glasses shaped like 2002 (with the eyeholes being the zeros) and him with a Presidente in each of the four pockets and one in each hand. Talk about Boy Scout preparedness!
There were 2 bandstands. A salsa band at one end alternated with a jazzier combo on the other.
After adapting to island time I assumed that "midnight" would be tardy like everything else, but in this case the powers that be actually came in ahead of the curve. The fireworks went off at about 1140 and at least one of them fell over shooting fireballs parallel to the ground (whoa!).
After that my memory is a bit blurry, but I think I ended up on the municipal dock listening to Cuban CDs!

This past yNew Year I opted for a private party thrown by someone who posts here frequently. It was a great spread, and the DJ spun great tunes. I returned to my rental in town for the fireworks, and watched from the roof.

I have a couple more stories, but I am going to encourage the people who participated to write them up...

Doug

I also love Culebra... ever since I visited the island I have wanted to go back but to be able to stay at the Culebra Beach Villas, they have the most charming houses with hammocks, balconies, barbecue facilities, air conditioning, etc...

Most probably I am going to be staying there with my boyfriend... At LASTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT... but could you explain to me what is a bio-bay? He is very into "wild" beaches... and we are so much looking forward to the relaxing... Ohhhh and who knows, I dream of a wedding there at the beach... hmmmm, romantic indeed...

My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon on Culebra and the whole five days is one great memory. We stayed in Culebra Beach Villas right on Flamenco Beach and it was amazing. The water was super clear and you could see schools of fish swimming in the surf. All of the locals were very friendly and willing to have conversations with us. We took the ferry over this time, but next time I think that we will fly to have the experience that everyone else talks about. The downtown area was under construction, but still navigable and the rest of the island was very reachable with the Thing that we rented from Dick. Zoni Beach is a must if you like solitude and beautiful beach time. We met so many great people on the island that we will definitely return as soon as possible.

My wife and I have been to Culebra twice in the past three years. One of our favorite memories is the almost daily hikes we made to snorkle at Carlos Rosario beach. You have to follow the fence-line that starts at the Admin building at the Flamenco Beach Campground. There is a break in the fence @ 50 yds up the fence-line. The 45 min hike follows an old road that first takes you to Playa Tamarindo Grande. The reef at Tamarindo Grande is spectacular in its own right. Many different types of coral and fans. Lots of fish, and occasional eels and lobsters. The reef at Carlos Rosario starts from a triangular shaped sandy bottom break that extends from the shore to a point @ 100 yrds out. We liked to follow the right side (when facing seaward) of the triangle out to a spot that drops off to wall of coral @ 40 ft deep. Many big fish and beautiful coral. We made this hike @ 10 times, and most of the time we were the only ones there. If you are staying in town there are vans that run continuously to Playa Flamenco from early in the morning until late afternoon. If you are not into snorkling, Zoni Beach is a beautiful place to just have a picnic and play in the waves and Punta Soldado has the best sunsets.

My favorite Culebra memory was when I got my frist glimpse of Flamenco Beach. My girlfriend and I took the Ferry from Fajardo and rented a Jeep for the day. When we drove over to Flamenco all I knew of it was from the pictures I had seen on the inernet.. and when I finally saw it in person, it was just unreal. The most beautiful beach I have ever seen (I had yet to see Zoni)
Later in the day we drove around the island and I felt like Indiana Jones on many of those roads... the Jeep we had was a champ and got through it all. =)

Every single moment on that Island was magic. I cannot wait to come back.

My girlfriend and I still cant decide if we loved Zoni or Flamenco more.

We went on a day trip from Vieques, which we love to visit often. Culebra was very pleasant and is much more colorful and picturesque (sp) than Vieques. We spent a nice hote day at the beach and a fun trip back with jet skiers chasing us back to Vieques. www.enchanted-isle.com

What sort of schedule, if any, do you have for leaving from Mamacita's, and heading to Culebrita and Luis Pena? Do you do day trips, drop off and pickup? What does this interesting service cost? Thanks!

My favorite memory of Culebra is remembering how my buddies and I cruised in our bicycles from Dewey to Zoni beach during Hurricane Jeane. Man, that was a nice ride under the rain, watching all of the beautiful culebra folliage under the warm rain. Zoni beach was lonely and beautiful as always! No way we were going to let the storm ruin our vacation. "Si del cielo te caen limones aprende a hacer limonada..."

When we first arived at Flamenco Beach on bikes during hurricane Jeanne, entrance was shut down, so had to ride all the way around the lagoon, then in through the side. Getting there and going swimming with my buddies while it rained.

Stepping out of the airport, and the only thing moving were chickens and palm trees....
Eating at Mamacitas, and a little lizard ran by...
Meeting the couple that sails around the Caribbean permanently...
Staying at the campground and watching the baby chicks follow the hen around...
The blue green of the water as far as the eye can see....
Watching the sunset, and being the only people on all of Flamenco Beach...
Taxi bus rides with friendly drunken college students...

I think about Culebra often

So far one of my top memories of Culebra is the time when we arrived by sailboat to Culebra entering through the Culebrita reef at 3:00am. It was
during New Moon and we could see nothing! A bit scary but totally magical.

The rewards of having no light pollution!

We could only hear the waves crashing unto the reef very close by. It was exhilirating and beyond magical. We could see St. Thomas lit up like a Christmas tree and see NOTHING of Culebra.

The perfect natural spot.

I totally recommend a trip out to the bay when the New Moon has set, take a kayak, canoe or small boat. Yo will love it!!!

My favorite memory was during Thanksgiving week 2004 after sailing my trimaran sailboat, Rogue Wave, 1,700 miles from Connecticut, was seeing, as the sun rose in the early morning, Culebra appearing on the horizon! Culebra is the perfect tropical island landfall after a long and cold North Atlantic sail! I was only on Culebra for a few hours because I had to get back home to my family but we're greatly looking forward to returning for two weeks for our annual Christmas adventure. Watch out everyone! A mom and dad and SEVEN teenager types!!!!!! We're looking forward to diving, running, sunning, dancing, sailing, laughing, and being together! Our next favorite memory is still yet to come! I met several really nice people who assisted me with a bunch of things concerning Rogue Wave: Bobby, his mom and dad, and Capt. Kirk. We can't wait to return!

Tom,
Kayaking to Pela bay. The most beautiful little bay I've ever seen. My wife and I swam with dolphins. Hiking to Resaca and or Brava beach where you might have a beach to yourself all day!!! Snorkelling Carlos Resario is fabulous. The first visit with Jerry of Jerry's jeeps is a wonderful experience. He is the nicest guy you will ever meet and his maps are collector items. What a great place. We can't wait to go back for our fourth year in a row.
