Cancel or not to cancel trip to Culebra due to hurricane?

I am just nurvious about my trip to Culebra during the second week of October. Just hearing all these news about the hurricane that's going towards Jamaca makes me want to cancel my trip to Culebra. Does anyone have any helpful tips on what I should do? Do you think I should wait a little bit yet before canceling it?

Hi Natasha,

It is very tricky to give you advise, as hurricanes and their paths are unpredictable.

You could try keeping an eye on the weather.

Search in Google for 'Hurricane tracking', I found a particular site part of noaa.gov that I like very much, check it out - it can give you an idea of the current and possible future tropical storms and hurricanes.

Good luck!

Natasha
I just came back from Culebra on 9/23/04 after getting run over by Hurricane Jeanne. Before the trip I was keeping a close eye on the weather and the only storm in sight was Ivan. At the time Ivan was no longer a risk to Puerto Rico so I felt glad that nothing else was in the radars. We traveled happily thinking that we were going to have nothing but good weather and just as we arrived (9/14/04) Tropical storm Jeanne popped out of nowhere. We barely had time to make it from Fajardo to Culebra. Later that night, the storm made its way through Puerto Rico. We were in for 2 days of straigh heavy rains. Puerto Rico lost electricity and water all over. The outages affected the island for the next 5 days until some sense of normality was re-established. If there is anything I learned from this experience is that storms are completely random and unpredictable no matter what the hurricane center says. Travel at your own risk. This has been a realy busy hurricane season and there is really no way to tell if it is going to let up anytime soon.

Wow....I am sorry to hear about your trip. What a disappointment. Thanks for sharing about your experience. It definitely tells me that there is no way to tell. I'll just have to take my chances and see what happens.

hi natasha, I visted Culebra from October 5-16th two years ago, and I loved it so much I'm making a return visit beginning this Sunday, Oct 3, staying through the 20th. I stay in my tent at Flamingo Beach, so I'm really mindful of the weather. Last time, I got rained on really hard one or two times, but most days were sunny and beautiful. There was rarely any wind. The best part was that the beach was completely EMPTY during most of my stay. I met some sailors and spent a fair amount of time in a small boat on the open water, and it was almost completely peaceful and uneventful weatherwise. It's true, there's no way to predict the weather in advance, but it feels to me like the whole hurricane calamity is waning as the season draws to a close. Culebra is one of the most beautiful places I've visited--I don't think even a hurricane could deter me after having visited. Good luck!

Hello Peggy,
Your response is very encouraging. I really worry about the weather and it's good to hear that you are very determine to go. My husband and I are going to be there during your visit. Perhaps we'll see you there. Did you have to put up with a lot of mosquitoes when you were there last time? What time of the day are they most annoying? Evening perhaps?

Melanie,

As someone who was on Culebra when Torpical Storm Jeanne hit in September I have to say that it really was not a big deal but more of an inconvenience. All transportation was shut down to and from the island for about 3 days because the torential rain just kept on coming but we never felt in danger for our lives or anything to that effect.

Prior to our trip we kept a constant watch on the National Hurricane Center's website http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ which was very helpful, but if you do not have travel insurance for your plane tickets unless a hurrricane is imminent it could cost you a hefty some to change or cancel your flights.

As I said previously though that the whole experience was more of a incovenience than anything as we had planned on taking the ferry over to Viesques the day before the storm hit and all the ferry's were shut down so we were stuck on Culebra for three days.

Hope that helps,

Charlotte
