Turtle Season
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I plan on visiting Culebra around mid May and have a few questions about what I may encounter during my visit. First, approximately when are the turtles nesting? If they are nesting while I am there who could I contact to participate in the nesting program, and what does the program consist of. I have also read that you may need to volunteer for several nights and can not do just one. Second are any of the nesting beaches closed to the public for day use during nesting season? Third in an unrelated topic I have seen several posts concerning Flamenco campground, is it 10 or 20 dollars or both, what is the difference. Thanks for any help.

If you’re interested in volunteering this year with the Culebra Sea Turtle Nesting Project, now is the time to make plans. Group participation is limited to 10 persons per night. Kids must be over 10 years of age and for every four participating minors, there must be one adult. All off-island participants must confirm lodging on Culebra for the night of their excursion. Off-island groups are required to send a refundable deposit of $20 to CORALations to secure their reservation. The deposit check will be returned to you on the night of your excursion. If the group does not show, the deposit will be treated as a donation to the project. You will receive an e-mail confirming your reservations when the check has been received. There is no charge for this activity. Your participation is valued as a contribution toward the collection of critical nesting data on the endangered Giant Leatherback Sea Turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) on Culebra. For more information, contact CORALations at 1-877-77CORAL.

Hi Ken,
Are you associated with the project? you are awfully knowledgeable and sound like an "insider".

We will be on Culebra on April 7 - 9. Do you think we can sign up when we get there or should I be reserving and sending a deposit at this late date?

Thank you!
Ginny
