Week in Culebra!!!
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi there!!
First, I wanted to take a moment to compliment and thank you for the plethora of information you have provided not only on this site but the information I have found very useful in the forum. It has guided me in some of my planning for my upcoming trip to Culebra. I will be travelling to island from March 27-April 3 with my 18 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter. We will be staying at Casa Ensenada and can't wait to experience all your little piece of paradise has to offer. We will be taking the 3 pm ferry over on Sunday the 27th (tickets purchased through the information provided here) and flying out on the 3rd. My plan is to utilize the kitchen and cook some of our meals as well as check out a lot of the local fare. Hoping to charter a boat to do one or two day excursions and have lazy days snorkeling and exploring the island. I gather I can get a lot of information at the Dinghy Dock?
As a mom and RN I was curious if you had any tips on anything I should be packing to ensure a great experience while we are there. I of course know to pack sunscreen but how are the mosquitos/ critters? Any pieces of advice on things I should keep in mind with two teenagers in tow? We are adventurous and love to travel and make memories together. Any additional information and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!!
Kelly

Bring dramamine for the ferry ride.
Mosquitoes can be bad or not. Just depends on where you're at and what you're doing.
If you want to charter a boat, it might not be a bad idea to start calling / reserving now. You never know if you'll be able to get one once you arrive.

The charters, in my experience, are expensive (To Culebrita I believe was $80 per person when we went) but worth it for a one-off experience.

Dinghy dock is just a local restaurant / hangout. If you need something, you can usually find someone there who knows where to find it.

If you plan on renting a jeep or golf cart, again, you might want to reserve early. I doubt they'll be booked up when you arrive, but you never know.

Thank you Kevin!
Dramamine/ bugspray now added to necessities list. I've budgeted for the expenses of the boat charters. Figured it would be pricey! Will now do some research on boat charters and golf cart rentals... Thank you for your input!! You rock!!

You can buy very good ('deep forest' with lots of DEET - lol) in Culebra. That stuff WORKS!
I am usually a 'birkenstock' kind of guy, but when it comes to getting bitten ...

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael,

Lol!! I amvery familiar with DEET! Grew up in Canada where the horse flies would attempt to pick you up and carry you off without a good dose of Deep Forest!!! Glad to know I can grab supplies on the island though. My teens and I are all attempting to only carry a back pack each for this trip so we will have limited space. I will be acquiring our snorkeling equipment on the island also. Trying to keep it as simple as possible.
Thank you for your response! Really getting excited to explore Puerto Rico for a couple days and then Culebra for a week!
Have a great day!!

You can get your golf carts from Jerry's jeeps or Carlos Jeeps. I like Jerry. He's a good guy, so that's always my preference.

Enjoy Culebra! We are on the west coast of the big island and just can't ever find time (Kids are in school) to make the trip over there, unfortunately.

Kevin,

Thank you for the input about Jerry's. Several good referrals sent me to there for my week golf cart reservation. Getting so excited about our trip. Been at work in Princeton NJ since yesterday at 7 am as a nurse and will probably be here till wit least tomorrow morning if not later...I love being a nurse....but I need a vacation!!!

Have a great day!!!

Hi Kelly
we were there in December, Capt Sebastian took us to Culebrita, awesome trip. Bug spray is good to have but we were in the water most of the day and didn't use much. You should check out Susie's restaurant while you are there. Headed back in March. have a great trip.

Dear Michael Noel,

Will definitely check out Susie's. We have a kitchen and plan on preparing some meals at our accommodations but look forward to trying different local food options. While I was stuck in Newark traveling for work i received a call back from Captain Bill and booked a day trip to Culebrita. Thank you for your suggestions! I appreciate it!!

Have an awesome day!

I'd have to say my favorite beach was on Culebrita. Tortuga beach I think it is called. Absolutely beautiful. We were the only ones there when we went out. Zoni is also beautiful, make sure to explore in both directions, it's a long walk to the left at Zoni but totally worth it.

Michael Noel,

More great information. I'm keeping notes on all the pointers and advice. Just ordered some hiking/ water sport shoes for the kids and I. I'm realizing the terrain requires something more durable and protective than flip flops. Planning on exploring Culebrita for a day...and seeing a lot of suggestions about other areas of Culebra to explore and snorkel. I am so excited about our trip and thank everyone for their input on making this vacation amazing! Presently in South Bend IN with a temperature of 27F!!!!! Can't wait to spend a week making memories with my kids and exploring everything Culebra has to offer!!

Have a great day!
