Safe for woman camping alone?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm trying to find a few buddies who will go camping with me and surprised by how many "non camping" friends I have. Is it safe for a woman who wants to camp alone for a weekend in the campgrounds?

I don't know when you're going but I'll be there with some friends (1 other female) starting on April 18th. Let me know if you're interested in meeting up.

Thanks for your replies. I've been able to recruit one person to join me. I think it may be difficult to get on the ferry during Spring break so we may not go during that time. Thanks for offering to meetup. I will definitely be in touch if we decide to not wait till the Summer.

Wanda,

Try searching this forum using the Search function just below "FORUM" listed on the left. Search using the author name "lauraadventueseeker". Make sure to check "author" as part of your search. She asked the same question and also followed up with reports about her trip.

Yes, I did it for one night, planning many more. Your friends are missing out, but camping alone is lovely and walks across the beach by yourself is amazing. Plus there are plenty of friendly people. Camp toward the back of the campground where the long-term campers are, it's more quiet. Have a great time.

Thanks Barbara, I'm so excited! I've decided to go in July. Sounds like it's going to be a great time.

Why would it EVER be safe for a woman to camp alone?

Daddy, that might be the case in Vieques, but Flamenco is different!

Enjoy Culebra!

Wanda,
I went camping twice at Flamenco in 2012, once in feb with just my mother and I (she insisted I shouldnt go alone) and then I went again in April of 2012 for 10 days completely alone (after my mother concluded it was safe enough for me to go alone, I think she just wanted me to take her to puerto rico again so she played the worried mom card haha)...it was great and I never felt not safe. I wondered all around the island on my own, even went to mamacitas to listen to the drums one night after eating at zaco tacos and ending up walking back to flamenco at 11 or 12 that night and still felt safe.
Hope you enjoy...I cant wait to come back and spend a few nights at Flamenco.
PS if you have never camped there, dont be fooled bring a cot to sleep on...the ground hurts to sleep on (that is my one lesson learned) of course a hammock to sleep in is awesome also : )

Jenn, sorry it's taken me so long to write back. Thanks for your answer. My trip out there was delayed. Glad to know the campground is safe for solo women travelers. Thanks again and hope to get out there eventually.
