First Visit
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Good Morning,

We're looking forward to our first visit this coming February and had a couple of quick questions.

1) Do local businesses accept credit cards or do they prefer cash?

2) We've rented a jeep through Avis and were told to call and schedule an airport pickup, however each time I've called I get a recording. Do they have normal office hours?

3) How far in advance should we book a water taxi out to one of the isles? Wait until we get to Culebra, or book further out?

Thanks for any input!

Best,

Melinda

They all take credit cards except the gas station at the ferry dock.
Not sure about Avis and no answer.
The water taxi in Feb really depends on the wind and sea conditions. I would try to go the first calm day they will take you or else you may miss your window of opportunity if the winds pick up. Check windguru.com and select Puerto Rico - Playas del Yunque.

Enjoy!

Be advised, no one on the island accepts American Express. NONE of the businesses at all.

If you want a real adventure and can drive a stick shift rent a Volkswagon thing from Dick & Cathy. Its cheaper per day than any one else, no insurance required, not tax and they only take cash. But its a blast! We have done it about 3 times so far. Here is their number 787-742-0062. Dick will pick you up and drop you off either from the airport or the ferry. You can drop off your laundry and Cathy will do that for you also.

I second the laundry. They did mine, but beware they dry by "solar power". We were there during an extremely rainy week so it took longer than usual to get ours back. Also, I was unaware that Avis rented on Culebra. I thought it was Dick and Cathys, Carlos and Jerry's. We have not been there in a coupld of years though.

Dick and Cathie are awesome!! They also rent bikes, and Jerry does some landscaping, or at least sells plants (they were riding around in the van with us when he picked us up the last time. He also loaned my husband a pair of shorts one year when our bags did not make it to SJU until the second day of our trip.

I don't drive a stick sadly.

I think Avis may have replaced Thrifty? But looks like we'll be changing our reservation anyway since their hours are limited and our connecting flights are changing since Cape Air has had some flight changes in February....

Thanks for the input, its appreciated.
