Is the ferry to Culebra Fully operational?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

Are the ferries to Culebra finally operating a full schedule? I remember one passenger ferry was out of service for maintenance back in March. Causing a lot of problems for everyone. Is this all OK now?

I had the worst experience ever crossing over to Culebra.

We showed up at the ticketing at 7:00AM; lines were long. After about an hour in line and at the window we were told that all the tickets were out for the 10:00 AM departure.

There was no clear information, we were told that tickets will be available for 3:00PM. We lined up for that one after about 2 hours of waiting again it was announced that the tickets for 3:00PM sold out! they were only selling tickets for the 7:00PM departure.

It was unbelievable, we were stuck in Fajardo for 12 hours, literally doing nothing but to line up for tickets. We showed up a 7:00AM and didn't get to the ferry until 7:00PM.

Thanks.

I took the Ferry the first week in September. I heard the early ferry was packed and people were on line for a long time. We got there for the 2PM ferry. There was no line, and hardly anyone on it. I guess if you're flexible with your time, the later one seems to be the way to go.

Rather than spend part of our vacation on a line waiting, we just altered our plans and did something else the morning before we went to Culebra.

I took the ferry from Fajardo to Culebra twice the first week of September. I got there at about 7:00AM and waited in line. Got on the 9:00 AM ferry both times, no problems. I think the new ferry service can accomodate more passengers each trip.

Coming in a couple weeks for the first time. Do they allow cars on the ferry if the rental company allows it?

The passenger ferry does not allow vehicles on it. There is another cargo ferry that travels back and forth but we were never able to find much more information on it, other than spots are for residents first.

What we did was leave our rental car at a parking area near the ferry. That worked out cheaper for us than doing 2 different rentals. And it gave us the option to be able to leave the island and have transportation there if we needed it...we never did though, and stayed the entire time not not wanting to leave :)

The parking lot by the ferry on the Fajardo side is like $5/day. getting your car on the ferry can be a real pain. All locals and construction vehicles get first dibs and it's usually pretty fool.

Thanks for quick replies! Anyone know how reliable the ferry has been? We're coming in 2 weeks with 2 children (3pm ferry on a Sunday). Hoping that it will be an easy trip for us.

We can see the passenger and cargo ferry from where we are staying and they all seem to be running frequently several times a day. I don't know the schedule so I don't know how close to schedule they run but they do seem to be fairly regularly.
