Water temps in January are comfortable for adults if you keep moving. I find the temps from December to March to be a refreshing break from the warm sun. Kids and small bodied adults could get chilled if you are in the water for more than an hour. Getting out and warming in the sun takes care of that pretty quick. A 1mm or 2mm dive skin would be a good choice for some one who chills easily. The wind can make things a little choppy, more on the north side of the island. Good for waves and body surfing. This past March we had incredible body surfing conditions at Flamenco and the kids would not get out of the water and worked so hard they kept warm. Head to the south beaches to get some calm water for better snorkeling. Winds can be unpredictable in strength so you never know what will greet you. The great thing about Culebra is that a short ride gets you to different surf conditions quickly.

Those of us who lack a layer of blubber find that we need wet suits if we want to snorkel for more than an hour.

We have been twice, both times in January, and loved it. I don't like getting the least bit cold and the solution we used is to buy some inexpensive short wetsuits from Sam's Club. Having said that, we were the only ones in the water wearing them, but I certainly enjoyed escaping the chill.

We snorkeled Tamarindo and Carlos Rosario and the the water was relatively calm and we had no problems. Boogie boarding at Flamenco was awesome.

We love January, no crowds and great water activities. The best of all worlds.

Peace out
Herb

Thanks for the responses. I can't wait to go. The weather that time of year at my home will be close to 0, so it should feel warm to us.
