Thoughts and tips
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hey everyone, We are excited and looking forward to the upcoming week long trip to PR - arriving on 5th June and departing on 12th.

This is our plan so far
5th and 6th night - San Juan
7th (Thu) and 8th (Fri) night - Culebra
9th and 10th night - El Yunque
11th night - Old San Juan

Few questions -
1) After reading the forums, ferry seems fairly unreliable (getting tickets). Is that the case even on weekdays?

2) Are there Kayak rentals on the beach?

3) If we rent a scooter, will it be possible to ride it all around the island (remote beaches?). Or should we stick with a jeep rental?

4)

4) Is there anyway to get the ferry tickets in advance?

Hi...I have rented scooters many times on Culebra. Its a great feeling. But beware of the dirt roads. Even the best driver will find that the tires of a scooter can slip on the sand and gravel. Alas, I know from experience.

So, if you stick to the paved roads, scooters are fun and economical. But some of the more remote parts of the island are on rougher, dirt roads.

Enjoy!

Bill

I hear the ferry is runny pretty much on schedule now. You can get tix in advance if you stay at someone's place who gets them for you and mails them to you ex Palmetto guest house. You can get the kayak rentals on the beach at Tamarindo. Scooter and bike riding can be scetchy because of the winding roads with minimal visibility around each corner and every young person driving a jeep thinks it fun to drive fast. And no one like to get run over on vacation. Have fun.

Thank you everyone for the replies. Looks like we are finally all set for the hotels for the entire trip.

Now ferry / flight and scooter/car on the island are the only remaining hurdles.

Scooter/Car still undecided, I am leaning towards a scooter - from suggestions here it sounds more fun, risky but fun.

another question:
Should we do snorkeling with Aquafari/other trip organizers or rent a kayak/snorkel gear and kayak to Luis Pena and enjoy the day with our own schedule?

thanks!
