Mosquitoes and Accommodations in early September
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,

My husband and I are travelling to Puerto Rico from September 5 through 12, and we would like to come to Culebra. In Culebra, we would like to stay somewhere where we can wake up, have coffee, and sit on a hammock overlooking water or sink our toes into the sand of a beach. Any suggestions for accommodations?

Also, I am concerned about mosquitoes during this time. Are they awful? I am pregnant and concerned about getting bitten and falling ill. Are there certain types of snakes or fish to beware of as well?

Any tips or suggestions people can offer will be much appreciated!

Thank you,
Kimberly

have not traveled to Culebra that time of year so can't comment on the bugs but as for other things to beware of -- sea urchins. They seemed to be particlarly bad at Playa Melones each time I have been there so keep an eye out.

Try Villa Flamenco Beach 787-742-0023. The second floor front apartments have balconies overlooking the beach and there is a hammock in the front yard.

Hi Kimberly:

I personally reccomend Culebra to meet all of your expectations. Regarding mosquitoes, it could certainly ruin your vacation if you are not aware of certain facts. My wife and I just got back from a four day vacation after we had taken a long seven days cruise. My fear when I got to Culebra was mosquitoes. During the summer months, June, July, and August it is awesome, I did not experience a single mosquitoe bite. However, I am not familiar with the month of September.

Two years ago I went to Culebra for approximately one week. I completely got bombarded by mosquitoes. Towards the end of my vacation I looked like if I had the mumps. The itching and scratching lasted roughly for months. I did not get sick, but it was an uncorfortable experience.

The reason for the mosquitoes in Culebra was because we went there during the off season. This was during the month of October towards the beginning of November. I guess the biggest reason for these little pests was because Culebra had just underwent tremendous rain falls, and overall they just had bad weather. Other than these facts, I can assure you Culebra can be a super paradise. Like other Islands in the world, you get the good and the bad, but you have to do your homework in order to enjoy yourself.

My opinion and answer to your question would be; that Culebra has all of your demands. My sugestion would be Flamenco beach. It certainly has all of your expectations, water front, hammock, angel white sand, Blueish, turquoise crystal clear water, which does not have snakes or poisonous fish, merely just beautiful tropical fish, and seemingly, a never ending periphery shore.

You must be aware that the hotel in Flamenco Beach is not a five star rating type hotel, and the outskirts cosmetics behind the hotel can be a little disapointing, do not expect something like the San Juan Hilton. I would rate this place Ecxellent and different. Perhaps something like an awesome camping expedition. This is a place far away from the planet that can give you the peace of mind you would be looking for, a place just away from the rest of the world. I strongly reccomend apartment 2-A in Flamenco Villas Hotel. Remember, Flamenco Beach is one of the ten top beaches in the world per Discovery channel.

Sincerely,

Mr. and Mrs Flores
