Hiking on Culebra?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My wife and I like to hike in wilderness and scenic areas. We'll be on Culebra, near Zoni Beach, for a week in January.

Could you please recommend hikes -- trails, rustic roads -- that we might explore? Are there maps of hikes?

To my knowledge there aren't any real hiking maps, however both of the hikes down to the secluded North Shore beaches of Bravo and Resaca are great little hikes that are quite wild and fun, and they both put you out on a fantastic beaches. Very hot though, bring water and watch the ocean if you decide to go swimming, it can be a bit treachorous, and chances are there won't be anyone else around at all. As far as getting there, any guide book will give you the basic gist. You'll need a car to get to the "trailhead", really just a worn path. As long as you keep going down and follow the sounds of the surf you will eventually get there.

Kirk,

Thanks for your prompt response.

The maps show that much of the island is occupied by wilderness preserve. Most of the natural reserves I know have paths for visitors.

Is that the case with the preserve areas on Culebra?

The paths can be quite overgrown, depending on the amount of recent rain, but yes, there are paths. They are not necessarily maintained by the government or anyone else for the benefit of visitors.

When hiking you want to stay on the paths because there may still be some unexploded ordinance lying around.
