Jerry's Jeep
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My wife and I went to Culebra Island for one night and stayed at Flamenco beach in the Villas. We rented a jeep from Jerry's jeep what a mistake that was all of his vehicles are falling apart, the guy was very weird and hard to deal with, he was fighting on the phone with his wife or girlfriend while we were filling out the rental paperwork and he charged my credit card another $356.00 after four months of us being there, so not only was it a bad experience for us dealing with him but he stole from us too.

Next time we will use Carlos Jeeps all their Jeeps looked new and it looks like a well run establishment you will see the difference between the two places so don't give him any credit card information or rent from him over the phone check it out in person, It cost us $356.00 for a day rental.

I have all the documentation and pictures of the the piece of crap he rented to us.

We have rented from Jerry many times. Yes, he is a character and yes, we have to listen to his speech that goes along with the hand drawn map he gives you. We reserved our jeep with a credit card, but he encouraged us to just mail him a check after we got home so we would not have the taxes. Our jeeps have always been beaters, but that is what we like. Just so they are okay mechanically. With the roads on Culebra being like they are with the wet year 2010, I would hate to think of having a new jeep, especially down to Zoni when we were there in July last year. Our sunroof leaked like a sieve and I almost had to bail water out of the floorboard, since it rained almost nonstop while we were there. I mean monsoon rains. We are returning for 2 weeks in July and will again rent from Jerry. Did you take up your problem with the overcharge with your credit card co? One thing that makes it difficult to deal with Jerry is his lack of a website or email. Sorry your experience was not a good one.

Did you research the options before you got there? If you had used this forum, you would have been able to determine the differences between the two companies. Jerry's is affectionately known as Jerry's Heaps, and they are PERFECT for Culebra. We've been renting from him for 10 years, and last month, we had our first ever breakdown in one of his cars. 10 YEARS! ONE breakdown! He maintains those jeeps quite well. It sounds to me like you must have done some damage to the vehicle you rented, and if you didn't work it out with insurance, then he was forced to charge your card. This is part of the rental agreement. Have you talked to him about the charge? He's really good about answering his phone.

As for Carlos Jeeps, I would be terrified of damaging one of those shiny, new behemoths! But if that's your style, then you have a choice next time.

Happy Diving!

I too have rented from Jerry, and agree he is a character, but I had no problems with either the vehicle or payment. My understanding is that Carlos' vehicles look so nice because he leases his vehicles and turns them in every year or two, whereas Jerry owns his. They may be old but they run and get you where you want to go, and as Debbie said they are great for Culebra. There's no way I'd want to take one of those nice shiny jeeps down to Punta Soldado or through the crater at Zoni.

Hi! I'm new to this forum but have lurked for quite a while to get information...ever since last year when we decided to hit Culebra this March. Anyway, we have a jeep reserved through Jerry's Jeeps and I'm not the least bit worried. I talked to Jerry on the phone and found his quirky personality charming. He was so easy-going and laid back it just made me think of "island time". He was also very helpful when I asked him if he knew anything about renting camping equipment on Flamenco. He happily gave me Franklin's number at Tent City and other useful information as well. I can't wait to get down there in March and meet Jerry in person!

Maybe charging my credit card $356 4 months after we rented a Jeep from him without notice or warning is just "Island Time" I call it theft and Visa the better business bureau and my attorney agree with me, I can't wait to meet Jerry in person again too.

Jerry a thief?!? There seems to be a lot James is leaving out. What was the $356 charge for on a one day rental? All he has to do is contest the charge with Visa. Who is he trying to impress? certainly none of us! "Better Business Bureau " on Culebra? A lawyer for a $356 charge?

So far, you haven't contacted the BBB or if you did, they haven't chosen to note a complaint on his Reliability Report.

I spoke on the phone with Jerry (he called me) and the charge was a mistake, he had mixed up some dates and confused me with another customer and is in the process of giving me a refund he was very nice and apologized for the error.

With all of the good things everyone is saying about him it makes sense to me now and I know the charge was not done intentionally or out of malice.

How nice of you, James, to come back here and let us know the outcome. As you can see, Jerry has a lot of loyal customers, and it was hard for us to believe it was anything but a mistake.

I hope you enjoy your next trip to Culebra.

Happy Diving!

I can't believe Jerry got confused and made a mistake. A chicken must have run off with his notepad. LOL

James that is great to your credit that you updated. that makes so much more sense. he's not the most seamless or polished of businessmen, but he's good. once he rebuilt a carb on the spot (it was a busy weekend it was about the last available on the island)

for future visitors reading this, regarding his 'fleet' yeah most look like crap but they run very well. but hey no worries about little dings.

Just came back from Culebra. Rented from Jerry. On the last day, the island ran out of gas and I couldn't fill up. Jerry was very understanding and filled the tank up for me at the current rate with no extra charges. I can't say enough good things about Jerry. He's a great guy. Hilarious. Extremely helpful. And somehow his map was the best out of all received. I can't wait to come back and rent from Jerry.

Does anyone know how early Jerry opens? We are planning an April 2012 trip and may have to take an early morning flight out of Culebra (8 am) and wnat to make sure we are able to return and process our rental.
Thanks in advance:)

I am cure if he is not open, he will let you leave your rental at his place, right across from the airport. We left our jeep at the ferry dock last summer when we caught the early ferry. Have a great trip.

Just let Jerry know when you arrive and he will be there to assist you.
