I know it doesn't happen often, but I'm still on the ferry after 14 1/2 hours.... Gonna have to pass next time.

The only part of the ferry that works is the anchor thanks to gravity.

OMG. That stinks. Stuck on the ferry over night! I can imagin how that evening went in the high seas. I hope Air Flamenco gets their act together.

Wacky,

I'm sorry that happened to you. You clearly did your research when planning your trip, and it stinks to have it start out that way. I hope you find the rest of the island and its amenities/beauty to be a much better experience than the ferry ride.

Cheers,
Debbie

Well, during the ride it was easy to say no thanks. However, it was an isolated incident, and sitting at the dingy dock after hanging out at flamenco, it actually was worth it. Culebra is freaking amazing!!! I'm so glad I have five more days, and I plan to take the ferry back, too. Like I said, its easy to be discouraged when in the throes of that, but even if it happens on the way back, its more than worth it. Way more. Only downfall, no surfboard rentals. Despite what many say, I'm seeing plenty of surfable waves. Next time I'm bringing one!

Thanks for all the help, this has been the best experience in a long time -- and I haven't even proposed to my girlfriend yet!!!

Cap'n,
I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to hear your ferry tale sometime. We've never had a problem with the ferry but from some of the other posts I've seen on here things can sure go wrong. But 14 1/2 hours? Wow!

Glad you are enjoying Culebra -- it truly is an awesome place, isn't it? Hope you make it to Zoni Beach, my personal favorite of the beaches you can drive to (more or less, in the case of Zoni).

Capt. W,

It'll probably tickle you to hear that one of the professional musicians on the island is writing a ballad commemorating your ordeal. Pre-release sales are already at 1 and counting!

So I finally have service on my phone! Anyway, I can't really complain about the ferry, seeing as it was probably our fault. My friends and I were on the top deck of the ferry at the back trying to get splashed, and the captain and crew were cracking up at us. I think they sped up trying to kick up more waves, and pushed it too far. The rudder broke and we just went in circles for hours until the cargo ferry towed us to culebra, but we couldn't dock until daylight, so we sat in that vomit filled ship for 6 hours! Looking back, it made for a hell of a first day, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The crew, the Coastguard, the police, and everyone else worked so hard and I can't thank them enough.

On a side note, where can we find the name of the Guy writing that song? All of us were thrilled to hear of it and would love a copy. This is the most wonderful place in the world, and will definitely be an annual trip! Beats the cost of a ticket to Oahu, and is nicer too! Thanks again for all the helpful info, you've made my fiance and my trip amazing.

The guy is my hubby. I've yet to hear him compose anything, but check back for further details.

I guess the fact that you now have a fiance means that she said "yes?" Congratulations!!!

Love, love, love that you still love Culebra after your horrible entrance.

Best wishes for a wonderful married life to you both.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Tell your hubby that I know nine people that would love to hear the song! Actually, we're glad things happened the way they did. It wasn't much fun at the time, but made for a great start to our trip.

And thank you, she did say "yes". How much better could it have been? Friends and family, the sun setting on flamenco... actually, we're about to put our announcement in the newspaper, and we've decided on a picture of us in snorkeled gear on Rosario.

Hands down, best trip ever!!! I'll be back in a year, no doubt

Actually, key west. But we'll be back in January a married couple for an engagement anniversary. Just look for the two happiest people on the beach the first week of January!

Is it weird that I still wake up thinking I'm still there?

Other than this incident, is the ferry typically reliable?

We are coming down to meet my sister on their boat at the ferry docs in Culebra on Feb 28. Should I phone to make ferry reservations for 3 pm departure? There are three of us taking a taxi from the airport.

Well, the good news is that the boat has a new rudder!

I highly doubt you'll get tickets by phone, just be there in person early. Again, I'll be taking the ferry next time, because I think it is reliable -- just a fluke for us. Try to be early though, I've heard stories of people having to wait for the next ferry, or the next day in my sisters case. I'd shoot for two hours in advance, and wander around the area. But stay together and don't flash cash!! Trust me, had an experience with that as well (nothing too bad, just a reminder not to flash wads of cash around)

In our two visits the ferry has been reliable both ways, but we have not been able to purchase tickets in advance. Our publico driver, John, tried to get them for us but was unable to, also. Our strategy has been to have one person stand by the entrance with the bags (so we don't have to haul all our luggage through the ticket line), and have another person in line for tickets. Then the others in the party can wander around and take their turn in line or watching bags.

There's a guy who sells bottles of water out of a cooler for $1 to the people waiting in line, and after an hour or so of standing in the sun it's definitely worth it.

Any luck on that song? We had a kind of reunion, and everyone was asking me. Just wondering

O and I want to audition for latin percussion. I can get my buddy Frankie Catalina in Sarasota to lay down a steel drum track. I love it when a plan comes together!

I almost forgot -- did he ever finish the song? Jk, no worries, we actually made a spoof off of the gilligan's island theme to it. I'm not really sure its going to sell....
