Best Snorkling and Kayaking Spots
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Going to Culebra for first time 6/17 - 6/21 and am looking for the best snorkling spots - and I promise not to broadcast this to the rest of the world! Have read Melones and Carlos Rosario are good, but assume there are others.

Also, would like to do some kayaking. Who does everyone suggest we rent from and where should we tour?

Thanks!

I've never had bad snorkeling at punta soldado -- can't say the same for Carlos Rosario (although generally good) or Melones

Here are a few specific experiences.

It's worth noting that windward exposure snorkling is always better on calm days.

At Carlos Rosario, it's worth swimming out a hundred yards or so past the marker buoy to get to the lushest part of the reef. This area is a little deeper, say about 20-30 feet, but it is where I have seen the most unsual fish and spectacular coral. Last May, saw a 2 1/2 foot green turtle, for example. Also have seen spectacular jellys there with bioelectric chaser light features. First time at CR, saw a rare spotted snake eel.

At Soldado and at Flamenco by the shark pens, have seen squadrons of transparent squid. Very Star Warsish. Saw a moray at Soldado last New Year's.

Since 1995, at Zoni, have watched what I presume to be a resident stingray grow from 8 inches across to about 3 feet. Also saw a small octopus blushing with apparent orgasmic pleasure from the ministrations of "cleaning station".

In the crescent shaped bay at Culebrita, have seen multiple green turtles, one of whom had lost a front flipper, and a 6 or 7 foot nurse shark.

Saw a little 3 foot nurse shark hiding under a blanched coral head at Luis Pena.

Keeps me coming back!

Doug
