What to do between flights
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We're planning a trip to Culebra this December and will have about 5 1/2 hours time on the day we leave between arriving at SJU and when our flight departs.
Taking M&N Aviation's 10:15am out of Culebra and our flight back to Maryland departs SJU at 6:40 (figure we need to be at SJU 4:30pm)
Don't want to hang out at SJU from 11am to 4:30 pm.
Any suggests for folks who wouldn't want to hang out at a bar?
I read someones post who simply went to the Ritz and acted like they were a guest. Not sure I'd have the guts to do that without looking guilty. Does anyone know how that would work?
Or any other suggestions regarding our plans.
Thanks!

Do you have to take M&N or can they change the departure time for you? I usually take Air Flamenco back to Grande departing Culebra at 3:30pm, gets you to Grande around 4:00pm, then cab over to SJU by 4:30ish. Gives you time to check in and hit the DuFree. Just an option.

The last time I was at the Conquistador they did not accept cash at the pool bar or outdoor dining areas. I used my hotel card and it charged my room. Not sure if they would have accepted a credit card instead of your room card. So if you are thinking of stopping by one of the resorts for a few hours make sure they will take a credit card.

And you can always walk around El Moro, the old fort on the point.

Good afternoon,
M & N is a charter & thus should be able to move your flight later. You are paying almost double with M & N.

We also always use Flamenco or VAL.

The Ritz will check bags & you don't need to be a guest. You can have lunch or pay for a spa treatment.

Thanks for the info.
I misunderstood what the folks at M&N told me regarding their schedule.
I just called them and clarified that they do have two flight each day, so we can leave Culebra at 3pm and avoid the long wait at SJU.
Their price was $160.50 per person round trip ($321 total)
compared to Air Flamenco at $105 per person round trip + 40 round trip taxi ($250 total)
The difference is $71 and M&N flies in and out of SJU

I feel your pain with the long wait at SJU. We had to wait 5 hours for our flight last month. Since we had so much luggage (scuba equipment), we opted to take the 0630 ferry out of Culebra and then took publico (John) to SJU. After getting up at 0430 and arriving to the ferry dock at 0530 to purchase tickets, I was wiped out by the time we arrived at SJU. After checking our dive bag with Delta, we still had all our carryons, otherwise we would have gone to OSJ. We considered getting a one way car rental and going to the rainforest, but we would had to have left all our luggage in our rental car, so we decided not to do that. We are returning for 2 weeks to Culebra next June and I am going to see if we can make better arrangements. By the time we got into Memphis after 9PM and driving home an hour and a half away I was totally exhausted, but Culebra is well worth it!!!

Thanks Vicki,
I don't think there's any way around the "whole day of travel" when visiting Culebra. But you are so right that it's worth it. And it's probably what keeps too many people from descending upon the beautiful little island.

There are storage lockers at SJU where you can store your carryons. When we came back from Culebra in April we took the 6:30 a.m. ferry, then had John bring us to SJU. (We have the same issue as Vicki with weight due to snorkeling equipment, so haven't tried flying to Culebra.) When we got to SJU we checked in for our flight so we didn't have to worry about our big luggage, then put our carryons in a locker and took a taxi to Old San Juan. We had a friend with us who had never been to OSJ, so he was able to get a flavor of the place, buy a few souvenirs, etc. The driver who took us to OSJ agreed to pick us up at a certain location in plenty of time to get us back to SJU to catch our flight. Worked out great!

If you're ready for a cheeseburger in Paradise, there is an outdoor bar and grill 5 minutes from SJU in Isla Verde, called La Playita. It is part of the La Playa hotel on Calle Amapola, near the El San Juan complex. Nice view of Isla Verde Bay where the occasional manatee sighting is always exciting, and the pina coladas are made with freshly cut coconuts and pineapples...yes it's a bar, but it's also a nice patio and a decent jukebox...Sinatra to raggaeton.

Sounds like a good option, Doug. We'll have to check that one out next time.

hi
so if youre going to take the 3pm flight over, you won't need this, but, another option is to fly to ceiba or ferry to fajardo and rent a car one way from avis, dropping it off at sju. you can shop on the way, go to osj or pinones.

Thanks Linda re info on storage lockers. We will certainly do this next time. Wish now I had posted something about this prior to our trip.
