Does anybody have information on why Culebra is not hosting the Heineken International Regatta? It it good or bad for Culebra that it has been moved to Palmas del Mar?

es muy bueno tener a la isla sin marineros borrachos.

Alberto that's a very good question. It's also the first time I found out about it. My guess would be - no marina. The Regatta grew and needs more infrastructure, whcih Culebra does not have.

Y en mi opinion, los marineros borachos estan en Culebra todos los fines de semanas y normalmente no ha problemas :)

Enjoy Culebra!

I asked some people and found out that they moved the Regatta for cost reasons. Palmas del Mar offered to cover most of the costs, using the event as marketing for their new marina. The event will eventually return to Culebra, mainly because of the fact that its proximity to the VI's makes it much more attractive for international competition.

The Heineken Regatta is a well organized event that brings money and the right people to the island. Most sailboat people (if not all) love and respect the sea, beaches, nature, and the envirionment. Most sailboat people hate powerboats just because of the noise they make! People that visit the VI's is the type of public that Culebra should try to attract. And although some (or most) people would like to selfishly keep Culebra EXACTLY as it is, the fact is that the island needs some well thought and controlled progress. Being 30 years behind in time might be a cool experience for a vacation, but not necesarily for the people that make a living and have to raise a familly on the island.

Alberto, I agree with you. Please, remember that the powerboaters that come every weekend - spend money every weekend ;) and if you look at Dakity you will see that they too do respect and love the nature there. There seems to be this divide between power boaters and sailors. I have been one of the people who would flee anchorages when I saw the first power boat. But having anchored in PR waters for some time I find that the people on powerboats are just as hospitable, friendly and respectful as the ones on sailboats :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael...no hard feelings agains power boaters. I can't afford one now, but if I ever do, I'll get a powerboat. The one hour sailing ride to Culebrita is possibly the best therapy por some...but I would rather get there in 15 minutes in a 15 ft dhingy and enjoy a Don Q and coke on the sand.

Anyway, my point is that the Regatta is the type of event that Culebra should take advantage of...it brings people, money, and benefits almost every business on the island. Culebra is going through some tough times and it seems like every year "high season" is getting shorter. Before you know it, places start going out of business and you end up with the worlds most beautiful beaches but with nowhere to spend the night or enjoy a nice dinner.

If we really love Culebra we have to look at the long term sustainability of the island, trying to avoid the selfish thoughts of keeping it "exactly as it is".

By the way, does anybody know if the Gulf gas station that provides service to boats is back in business? It was closed three weeks ago when I was last there. What happened?

The gulf station is not back in business. Apparently, the owners owe taxes, and they cannot get their permits back until they pay the taxes.

Happy Diving!
Debbie
