Sailing to Culebra - Customs?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We will be visting Culebra in a few weeks sailing down from St Thomas where we keep our boat - we are British citizens with a British flagged boat and we will fly into the USA and US VI via JFK and then STT - we have US Visas.

Questions

Do we have to clear out of the USVI and into Culebra

If so where do we do that - clear into Culebra that is?

Then once we get there where are the must see spots and best anchorages we hope to spend a few weeks there taking photographs sketching and doing some water colours. not forgetting lots of relaxing and snorkelling.

Also should we come down with full fuel tanks full water tanks and well stocked up with food or are all these easily available in/on Culebra?

thanks in anticipation

kindest regards

David

David, it is crucial that you clear out of St. Thomas (if you checked in, otherwise your departure papers from the BVIs will suffice) to be able to clear US Customs in Culebra. You do so at the airport. Fly your yellow flag, pick your anchorage and proceed straight away to the closest (to the airport) dinghy dock, in front of El Batey (-65.30204772949219, 18.305737058069784) from there it's about a 10 min walk to the airport. (you can get closer with the dinghy, but it's very hard to find and you might ruin your prop)

good luck and fair winds

Thanks for that Michael, our boat lives in St Thomas and we will fly into the USA then the USVI's and we have US Visa's We wont becoming to Culebra from the BVI's well that is not really part of the plan but this is sailing and really without any fixed cast in stone plans so there is a possibility that this could be a passage from JVD to Culebra when of course we would clear out of the BVI's. Amazingly the US VI HS people in St John tell us that we dont have to clear out of the US VI's to go to the BVI's BUT we must clear in when we return from the BVI's to the US VI's - seems strange that we have to clear in even though we have not cleared out but that is what we get told. We will of course check again this year to see if that instruction has changed. Thanks for the co ordinates of the dinghy dock.

What about getting food fuel and water in Culebra???

As to fair winds can you please arrange that we have 15/20 knots for the downwind passage to Culebra and 8/10/12 for the beat back to St Thomas :-)

There is fuel in Culebra, but you cannot bring a sailboat to it ;)

Water is even tougher.

For the way back, why don't you stop in St. Croix? Saves you the beat, your bow will be pointing that way anyway ...

Or you wait for that unlikely event of no winds and motor :)

Enjoy Culebra!
