Thrifty Car Rental
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Does anyone have any feedback on Thrifty Car Rental in Culebra or San Juan?

We're exploring one transport option that I wanted some thoughts on. We are thinking about renting a car from the San Juan Airport from Thrifty Car Rental, driving the car to Fajardo and dropping it off at the Thrifty in Fajardo, getting on the ferry and then possibly renting again from Thrifty on Culebra Island.

That seems like the most affordable option. It would cost $20 to rent the car from San Juan (cheaper than the $80 taxi) and would allow us to stock up on groceries. I'm wondering if this is too complicated of a plan though, and we'd have to hope and pray that the ferry is semi on schedule.

Thoughts?

Where in the world did you get the idea that Thrifty had a car rental place on Culebra?

From all those posters saying the veggie/fruit guy came on Tuesdays and Saturdays?

Or the ones who said those restaurants only took cash, not credit cards?

Or the guy who posted that the waves and currents were no problem to jet ski to St Thomas?

Or...

According to Bahia Marina's website, they have a Thrifty franchise.

I'm going in early March. Rented a car from enterprise in San Juan for around $25 a day with a $20 drop off charge in Fajardo.

Great idea! I have a couple of thoughts. Give yourself enough time to recover from getting lost. Its easy enough to do, and getting stuck trying to find some place to stay over night is no fun.

When we returned our rental car to Thrifty, the lot attendant asked us when our plane was scheduled to depart. He then took us to the airport using the scenic route with the intention of extracting a sightseeing "tip" from us. Next time I would tell him I was late and my flight leaves in less than an hour.

Peace out
Herb

Update. Thrifty has a drop off charge of $60, and Enterprise has a drop off charge of $40. By the time you add taxes, etc, you might as well just take a taxi.

I was wondering how it was *that* cheap. We've never been able to find a one way from SJU to Fajardo that beat the taxi price. Avis, on the other hand, usually has a good enough rate from Fajardo (Ceiba, actually) to SJU that does beat the taxi rates.

We got a rental from Enterprise from SJU to Fajardo for one day for about $45, including a $20 drop fee for the one-way rental. The first time I called I was told the drop fee was $20; the next time, when I was ready to actually reserve the car, I was told by a different agent that the drop fee was $30. When I told them I had been previously quoted $20 they gave it to me for $20. They promised us a ride to the ferry dock when we drop off the car, as long as they are reminded a couple of days ahead of time that we'll need a ride.

One month from tomorrow we leave snowy Michigan for Culebra. Can't wait!

driving from SJ to Fajardo is no big deal.

do you have an excess of time?
you can fly from isla grande or sju and save time.
besides that though,

i rent from avis, one way and drop it off in ceiba. they take you, promptly, to the airport or ferry.

check thier rates. and the drop off fee from them is 11%. which is usually less than $6.

Bahia Marina has Thrifty. We stayed there and rented from them in December. Great service and prices considering it was right in the middle of high season. Highly recommend to get a Jeep otherwise there is no way you can make it past the crater on your way to Zoni.

Can we all get together and rent a pickup, ask for some material from the town, and fix that damn crater?

LOL! Word is several folk got together to fix the bridge without the municipality's involvement. I'm sure it can be done.

That ravine is going to swallow a vehicle. That's probably when the minucipality will act on the public road. And walking down the pavement with loose gravel is tricky too. The dangers one encounters simply to get to Zoni!

A couple weeks ago a poor guy slid off the road into the bush because of those damn holes at Zoni. He was there for two hours before the police came out to give him a hand.

It really is ridiculous.
