Lockers at Campsite?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I won't be driving to the campsite, but of course want to lock up my essentials. Does the campsite offer lockers or somewhere you can lock up your valuables? Thanks in advance for any advice!

You can do a search on here, but I have seen posted several times that there are no lockers available.

Hola! Unfortunately, there are no lockers at the Flamenco Beach campsite. It's just your rustic type campsite, although there are basic showers and restrooms facilities. Look under SHELTER in this website for pics of the campsite. Others have also posted pics of the campsite. It will get you familiar with what's around the campsite.

This question has been posted before and there has not been a concrete answer to it. My recommendation, keep valuables to a minimum. Don't take anything that's not replaceable. As to your ID, credit cards, passports, there are some things you can do. You could call Banco Popular, the only bank on Culebra and inquire about a safety deposit box to keep your documents safe during your stay or maybe they have other suggestions on what to do with these. Banco Popular: 787-742-3572.

You could also call Culebra City Hall and ask what they recommend:
742-3503 742-3510 * 742-3521 * 742-3577

Maybe keeping your documents in a water proof container and bury them in the ground and pitching your tent on top. I know it sounds crazy, but if you have absolutely nowhere to keep your documents safe, and want peace of mind, I think they will be OK in this place. As far as other valuables, camera, camcorder, other electronics, keep them in your tent and lock it as best as possible and don't go too far, or just don't bring them.
Crime on Culebra is very minimum, hardly any. Unless you leave your things out in the open or on a table abandoned, they won't be taken.
Happy travels! J

Hey ya'll- thanks for all of this great advice!

I have been perusing the site, but reports are from a year ago (5-5-08) and if the economy is as bad there as it is in other tourist destinations, the need to "borrow forever" is ever present! Also, I was looking at Vieques and in the middle of this site it says there has been a rash of robberies - so even taking stuff with in a bag may be asking for trouble. http://www.elyunque.com/vieques_beaches.html Are these problems arising on Culebra/Culebrita? I was also wondering if I take off while my friend siestas or if I want to do some stuff on my own snorkeling, hiking or whatever, is it "safe"? Any tips always welcome! !Gracias!

We were there in January 2008 and the crowds were minimum and we were careful and never had anything "borrowed". I would assume that the more people there are, the greater the risk. There are not lockers, but there is ground level security, if you catch my drift.

Peace out
Herb

Hola! This was from a visitor who was at Culebra April 2009. She arrived by her own personal boat and describes her stay in detail. She is also asked about crime in Culebra. The question and answer is to the end of the page:

Here is another one from a guest that stayed May 29, 2009. She says Culebra is much safer alternative that Vieques:

I also know that you are concerned about the weather. Check wapa.tv for updates on the weather. They are accurate and updated many times during the day.
