First trip July 13th for a week.

My girlfriend and I are planning our first trip to Culebra July 13, 2009. We are flying into San Juan from Atlanta, Ga. I am just having trouble choosing the place to stay. We would like to be pretty sucluded and close to beaches we can snorkel off from. We are both young and fit, so we are planning to bike as much as possible to beaches. What place would afford us closeness to the best snorkeling beaches? (and she needs airconditioning) Thanks' Terry and Brandy Is anyone else going to be there from July13th to 20th?

Copied from the website under the "Shelter" link:

"There are two places available: Culebra Beach Villas - a large property with many units and Villa Flamenco Beach, a small family owned property with six apartments. Villa Flamenco Beach rents by the week or more."

Biking is probably not feasible. My husband and I are very fit and we made the mistake of biking. The road conditions are terrible and island traffic is not very courteous to bikers. The heat is on the island itself is comparable to south Florida type heat.

Villa Boheme and Villa Fulladoza are your best bets for around $100. Just be prepared for the roosters. Any accomodation near Dewey will have roosters crowing around 6AM. I would strongly consider camping. I would also rent a car, buy supplies at the Fajardo Walmart and take the ferry. PR as an island has plenty of things to do on Interstate 3 from SJU to Fajardo (El Yunque, glow lakes, Luquillo beach, golf....)

Carlos Rosario beach is a great beach for snorkeling. There are no signs for it. You walk through an unfenced area behind a parking lot near Flamenco beach. Zoni beach also has great snorkeling.

Thank you for the information. We received our airline tickets today. We arrive into San Juan July 13th at 1:30pm. We are planning to call and have Henry or John the week before and arrainge to pick us up and drive us to the ferry. (should be $70 - $80 by reading here) We should catch the ferry to the island after hitting Walmart. We are renting bikes and camping the first night at Flamenco Beach. I have read some posts that say biking is too tough and other posts say biking is fine. I run 5 miles three times a week and bike 20+ miles twice a week, I should be fine on a bike. We plan to check out the camping and see if we want to stay in a room for some or all of the rest of the nights. That way we are not tied to one place and can chose after seeing them. We have our own snorkel gear and have snorkeld quite a bit in the Keys and Bahama. We return home July 20th leaving San Juan at 3:52pm. That should give us plent of time to get to the airport. Does all this sound feasable? Thanks' Is anyone else going to be there that week?

Good morning,

As Culebra residents, my husband & I both run & bike on island. He trained for a triathlon here & I for a marathon, thus it certainly is possible.

We have also had plenty of guests do both as well. Sometimes folks arrive having not biked since they were children & then, although they find the idea of biking great for Culebra, find the actual act a bit much. We have also had many folks rent bikes & thoroughly enjoy biking all around.

This time of year, too, it is quite hot for most of the day, as opposed to the winter months when it's a bit cooler in the am & pm (even mid-day) for biking.

Previously we lived in Tortola in the BVI's with its switchbacks & taller mountains. Hence, for us, the hills of Culebra are quite bike friendly. It will all depend on point of reference.

Too, some roads have just been re-paved (yah!).

Re: accommodations, it would be a good idea to book before you arrive as July is a VERY busy month.

Enjoy your trip!

My husband and I will be on Culebra from July 15 to the 20 along with another couple. We found a great little house at homeaway.com.
This will also be our first trip to Culebra.

Maybe we will run into you on the island. We arrive on the 13th, so if we do see you we may be able to give you a pointer or two we learned the first couple days. We plan to snorkel a lot and lay on the more remote beaches.

My cell is 704-237-7084. I am told Verizon works well in Puerto Rico now. Hope to see you in Culebra. Terry and Brandy
