Herb on the Island

OK so we're all adults here right? Is it possible to buy some grass on the island? I will be down this weekend and staying for a week and don't feel like taping it to my thigh like we did last year. It's hard on the nerves and has the potential to ruin a vacation. Any tips on who to talk to on the island. I'm not a cop or a narc...I'm a gringo who wants to sit on Zoni, chill, and read my book. We smoked with a friend on the island last year but we dont want to have to bug him. Thanks!

And please don't get all high and mighty on me here...this is a serious inquiry.

The last time I was through SJU they had Malenois dogs checking out the incoming passengers. Carrying something illegal could possibly make for an interesting vacation.

Talk to the llamas. Don't confuse them with the alpacas because they sell rock.

Happy Diving!

nah the llamas are all Mormon. fat chance there.

I definitely would not chance bringing along in this day and age. way back I took chances and was lucky as hell (20 years ago plus) but that was before smellhounds were everywhere and we're talking strict European airports.

today - hell no, but if you can find it there it's just lagniappe - icing on the cake of your day.

not exactly the answer to your question, but really, don't chance it.

I'd say the prevailing enforcement activity on Culebra, and all of PR, is as tough or tougher than in the states. During Semana Semanta, the police reportedly searched and detained a signicant number of ferry passengers. As one who used to partake, I will truthfully testify that if you do Culebra the way it should be done, no illicit mood augmentation is necessary. With a simple daily regimen of Presidentes and a rum cocktail or two, plus the ever-present latitudinal magic, friends will have difficulty finding your pulse. If you *must* partake, rely on a trusted friend, not an open internet forum. That is my last serious word on this...

Hola! Definitely take a look at the local newspaper. You don't have to speak the language to figure out how many times a week the police crack down on cases that are drug related, now it's almost daily. Drugs, all of them, are ruining life on the island, not to mention young kids. Killings over who rules the selling points are also daily. Drug lords and their sellers do not hesitate to leave you like a sieve if you even look at them funny. Have you ever seen "Locked up abroad"? Imagine if you're caught and you're locked up in a jail in Puerto Rico. As soon as the inmates find out that a gringo is in their territory, you might as well kiss your white booty goodbye. It will be like a carnival for them, pinata at a kids' birthday party. Don't risk it, do the right thing. Don't contribute to something that right now is bringing down the puertorrican youth and the values of people who have contributed so much to society. I don't mean to lecture but, I have to stand up for the very thing that some of my family members risk their life for. Don't do drugs, don't bring them to the island and don't partake in this kind of activity with anyone on the island. There are many other things you can do to have fun. Drink Bacardi and Medalla because the way the economy is going, the local industries are in peril. Get high experiencing a great day on Flamingo, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, snorkeling at Carlos Rosario, having a plate of rice and beans at El Batey, a pina colada con Bacardi at Mamacitas, all the while engaging in great conversation with the locals. Happy travels! J

Thank you for your input on this guys.

I'm not going to risk bringing it with me nor will I ask any Joe Schmoe on the street where I can pick some up. I will bug my contact on the island and see what he can do. If not, it's not the end of the world.

Jeannie - The true crime here is that marijuana isn't already legalized. Our prisons are overcrowded with minor drug offenses and our country is in a recession. Why not legalize something that you could literally make billions of dollars a year on if you taxed it? There is a certain stigma associated with pot that is so archaic and old school it's almost laughable. Believe me the last thing I would want would be to become butt buddies with Bubba in a jail cell in San Juan...but the fact that I could potentially encounter that situation, and people have, for bringing a bag of weed with them on vacation is absurd. I respect that you have family members that risk their lives to protect people from the bad guys (I do too) but the guy with a few joints in his bag isn't the bad guy...it's the guy trafficking women, coke, heroin, etc that is the true problem. It seems hard to believe that we would lump the two of them in the same category.

Anyway, thatnks for the advice guys and gals. This is my 3rd year in a row escaping the Northeast and finding peace and quiet on your tiny island. I love it in Culebra and will do my best to keep it a secret.

PS - I plan on drinking a ton of Medalla and Bacardi...so don't worry about that.

Legalizing would definitely be the way to go. Unfortunately weed growers do not have such strong lobbyists as the tobacco and alcohol industry - both of whihc are more hazardous to your health than weed. I suggest joining Evo Morales in Bolivia and chewing some coca for a change :)

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
