it can be rocky, while I've been fine in water socks while carefully stepping (there are many brands, but my Speedos have lasted quite a while), something with an even sturdier sole (not necessarily boots) might be preferred. I like the flexibility of my socks and that they also go in the water and are good against urchins, it does take a few minutes to get used to actually walking in the dang things as opposed to street shoes. But then my feet are a little calloused already. YMMV.

there are acacia thorns to watch for everywhere, but as far as I'm aware that's about the worst to watch for and few shoes will protect if you really stomp on one.
