Saw this in USATOday this morning. How long will this last? It's part of an ordnance sweep apparently. Was this scheduled or the result of someone stumbling across another shell somewhere?

Yes, it was closed when we were on Culebra last week. We were told someone or group was on Culebrita clearing some of the ordnance. Sorry, do not know any additional details.

all the best, alashas http://honeymoon2.smugmug.com/

Most likely Culebrita was closed as a result of an unexploded ordnance that was found near Flamingo beach. The Core of Engineers are not only working at Culebrita but, they are also conducting sweeps at 5 other beaches looking for unexploded ordnance. The signs that are posted around area beaches are for a reason, like the ones seen passed the shark pen and at the far end of Carlos Rosario. Check out the article in the Culebra Calendar:

A biologist is also working at Culebrita and the other beaches looking for turtle nests. Yes, definitely closed until 1/23/09. Happy travels! J
