Ferry to Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am coming to Culebra next week and will be renting a car in San Juan. I plan to take the car over by ferry to Culebra from Farjardo.

Do I need to make a reservation or just show up? I have been trying to call the ferry contact number, but never get an answer.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you really shouldn't take that rental car on the cargo ferry to Culebra. First, the insurance won't cover the trip should something bad happen to the vehicle. Okay, so the odds are long and that might be worth the risk. But almost certain to happen is that when you go to leave from Culebra on the ferry:

a. the ferry won't be running that day
b. you will lose your spot to a local or a milk truck
c. there will be a llama show and the crowds will make leaving impossible

Okay, I am kidding about the llama but you just wait and see the comments it gets from certain others on this board.

Simply put -- The fact that nobody is answering the phones should be your first clue that things don't always go as planned going to Culebra, trying to leave Culebra ... or while you are in Culebra.

"Get Lost Here" (sorry Bret Easton Ellis - I had to)

"Nowhere Is Someplace to Go" (thanks James Brown)

or

"Fu@% You Lookin' At?" that's a moneymaker t-shirt anywhere.

"Come for the Llamas, Stay for the Alpacas"

ok the whole llama thing needs to end, I got a nasty threat from Wiki over that stunt - they're a touchy lot. bunch of gremlins they are.

whimsy 2008 - RIP.

Good morning,
Frank above is correct. Generally, you would be in violation of your rental agreement by taking a rental vehicle on the ferry.

Besides that, as mentioned, priority is given to residents & commercial vehicles.

When I make my reservation for the cargo ferry (in advance) I do so in person at the ferry dock. It is difficult to reach them by phone, however, this should be a mute point based on the above advice.

There is a secure lot in Fajardo at the ferry dock where you can park your rental for aprox. $5/day.

Have a good trip.
