Stuff to do
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello,

I'm surprising my wife with a trip to Culebra from jan 10-16th for our 2nd wedding aniversary/Christmas present. I'm just wondering what kinds of activities we can look forward to besides hanging out at the beach and hiking.

Are kayak rentals available? Bike rentals?

I've never went snorkeling, is it hard to learn? are classes available?

What about fishing, i don't know how to fish either. Are guides available to teach us?

Any other fun activities that you recommend we check out?

Thanks!

Hola! I would call the Puerto Rico Tourism Company 1-800-866-7827, they speak English, and request the "Que Pasa" magazine, maps, etc. Tell them that you will be visiting the island and Culebra and request they send you info about Culebra specifically. Call ASAP because you are leaving soon and sometimes this info can be slow to arrive. They answer the phone all week. You can also visit the website: http://theculebracalendaronline.com/ which is Culebra community newspaper and get an idea of what to do. This website, islaculebra.com will also give you tons of info. Just do a search under the SEARCH within the forum. I'm sure you'll get many of your questions answered. There will be probably too much to do. Happy travels! J

scuba requires training. snorkel is just dealing with comfort-level phobia (claustro esp. for me oddly) but once you get the hang - you're hooked (hung?).

and BTW what a cool present, when are you going to let her in on it?

I'd wait until the plane or ferry from main PR if possible. with packing suggestions of course.

I have to chime in about the surprise I've planned for my husband for his 40th... on 1/9, I'll wake him up at 4:30 AM, ask him to get dressed, and drink a quick cup of coffee before the limo picks us up at 5...still I will not let him in on anything...flying out of philly to san juan, where great friends from NC will meet us and surprise him. Next surprise will be taking the taxi to Isla Grande and flying to Culebra till 1/13. This will be our first "tropical" vacation together in our 9 years of marriage, as we always do cold vacations. His boss is totally in on the whole thing, and will cover his meetings, etc. This will truly be an amazing trip. It started by me finding a non-stop flight from philly to san juan for $250, and then doing research to find a more secluded place to go from there. This blog has been fun to read over the past 8 months... I feel like I have a feeling for what to expect, etc. Terrie at the Palmetto has been amazing. I chose the Palmetto because I read great things about her and her husband and the Palmetto. I would rather stay off the beach with great people than on the beach in a crappy place. I have been in touch with Terrie *several* times about one thing or another, and she has already gone beyond to help me out... I really look forward to meeting her and Mark! 3 weeks from today and counting!
