Culebra Places to Eat
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Larry Moores (---.cianbro.com)

Ola!.....we're heading to Culebra in early November and were wondering what is available these days for places to eat on the island. We'll be 4 days and would like to try a couple of the better restaurants then save some money maybe and eat at a few of the less expensive places. We'll also plan to pick up some groceries to save on lunches and breakfast. Thanks for the advice!

Susie's had the best meal we had, DD raved about the veggie lasagna at Mamacita's.

Always on my list when on Culebra:

Susie's (always excellent)
El Batey (lunch spot, best cheeseburgers)
Barbara Rosa's (byob, great value for great food)
Heather's (pizza and more)
The Spot (great for lunch too)

Hola! At El Batey also rice and stewed beans, grilled chicken breast and salad for under $10. Accompany with a side of tostones: $3. Drink a pina colada $2. People watching: free. Great Puertorrican experience: priceless. Happy travels! J

If price is not an issue, IMHO you cannot beat Juanita Banana. You will need reservations.

We are making a day trip to Culebra from Fajardo this week. Are there kiosks or restaurants open on Flamenco Beach? We are using the publicos and plan to strand ourselves on the beach until we head back to the ferry.

A few years ago there used to be a great hamburger tikki hut right there on the beach, but its been so long since I''ve been there things have probably changed.

Thanks for all the help folks...cant wait till we get there. Hurricane season is done, I hope.. :)

On weekends (including Friday) there are always kiosks open at Flamenco with several options. You can even get bags of ice.

On weekdays, there is usually at least one kiosk open (though it may be limited to chicken on a stick, fish on a stick, and perhaps hot dogs).

It really depends on the crowds. The more people there are on the beach and in the campground, the more food vendors there will be.

There are no restaurants at Flamenco per se. Just kiosks of varying sizes.

Mort,

I think Larry is referring to Coconuts, adjacent to the "high-rise". Do you know if that has closed?

Sorry, I was referring to the main Flamenco area. If there is something down at the far end of the beach, I'm not aware of it. Maybe someone else has been down there and can comment?

This is the place I meant. I just didn't know if it had closed.

I've learned from vast years of Internet surfing experience that it's never a good sign when a website says in its Latest News section: "Will re-open on December 22, 2004". (smile)

I guess it would take years of experience to catch that one - lol

Enjoy Culebra!

Yeah, I saw that. However I find that bars and restaurants that keep websites current are the exception rather than the rule, heh heh.

I know what you mean, Doug. It's amazing how many websites keep something up WAY beyond the expiration date.

But you gotta admit, this one was beyond the pale. I got a good laugh.

Terrie said that they closed only a year ago, which means that they didn't update their website for the final THREE YEARS they were in business! For a business that relies on tourists, it's an interesting approach!

Sorry, just to clarify, I haven't see them open for the last year, but they "may" have closed (or been open) prior to that :)

Thanks,

Thanks, Terrie. We're narrowing it down. This mystery will eventually be solved! If we have to, we'll mobilize the Culebra Mens Club to investigate in depth. Other than that whole thong business earlier this year, we haven't had many other important issues to deal with.

Mort: you are so generous but you just never stop giving...

el Batey does have a damn good burger, but it may take a while (or a few beers). coconuts had a decent one, but the pastillito (sp?) - empanadas really - kiosk on the beach had an excellent selection.

Typical conversation with a Culebra newbie:

Me: You really ought to check out El Batey for lunch. The beer is cold and the cheeseburgers are outstanding.

Newbie: Sounds good, I usually get hungry around 1pm.

Me: Well, build in some time. Sometimes it takes awhile.

Newbie: Really? Like how long?

Me: For me it's about a 3 beer wait, but others might find it only takes 1 or 2.

Ah, I see. That's how they sell more beers!

It's the old batey and switch!

Frank, You say that like it's a bad thing...Personally, that method of time measurement is one of the things that makes Culebra worth the plane-ride!

Doug, you misunderstand.

My goal is to make the wait for a cheeseburger at El Batey into a 12 beer wait. :-)

Oh and you give yourself away ... Culebra is well worth the FERRY ride. :-)

y'know with so many things it's such an incredibly fine line between 3 and 7. well not to public safety I suppose.

just be sensible. and have the burger.

Richard, I couldn't agree more. After all, "Friends don't let friends wait TOOOOO long for a cheeseburger at El Batey."

as long as one has invested the time, be patient and have the darn burger.

Driving, one will most likely never get out of 2nd gear or above 5 MPH anyway and Disney will let sugar deranged children do that.
