my uncle taught me a trick with cigarettes - pinch off the burning end that's just paper and tobacco, it'll biodegrade and is easier to extinguish (or even better bury) and pocket the synthetic filter until I'm by a trash can.

I still get dirty looks, but I know I'm being responsible.
